why do aftermarket mufflers seem to get louder over time?
I know glass packs do it because the filler kind of burns but what about mufflers without sound deadening material? I noticed this with my flowmaster after about 5k miles and my spintech is doing it too. my spintechs been on for about 2k but was on my buddies el camino for almost a year. it doesnt bother me but it baffles me. is it just the ecu?

I noticed this same thing when I put flowmasters on my truck, too. I'm thinking that after a new muffler heats up and cools down a bunch of times, it flexes the internals, which could possibly move them around inside the case. This may cause the baffles to move into a position that might make the exhaust sound louder. Don't know for sure, just a guess...
thanks for the response guamguy. that makes sense to me.

Sometimes my truck seems louder than other times as well. Though I doubt that it has to do with the internals of these mufflers. Brands like Flowmaster, Borla, Gibson, Magnaflow etc... use metall baffles inside to direct the exhaust flow in ways to lower noise. These metal baffles are welded in place. I find it hard to believe that these baffles would move at all unless you somehow manage to get so much back-pressure as to blow out your muffler. If muffler internals were constantly changing over time, wouldn't all mufflers eventually get too loud and have to be replaced?
I think the difference in sound is coming from something other than the muffler. For example, my truck is MUCH louder in cold/cool weather due to air temperature.
I'm no sound expert. just my 2 cents

you have a good point there. I was thinking it may be the insides warping a bit, kind of like a break-in thing. The only problem is my spintech was used in a dual exhaust set up on my buddys el camino. If that motor didn't break it in first, I can't see my truck hurting it. I am running it single as opposed to dual but his motor is pretty built and his foot weighs a ton. Either way, he gave me the flowmaster for free and the spin for $60, free install too.
If anybody else has an idea, please add it.
