Default Advice on paint

Guys, I am looking to paint my stock wheels black. I really don't want them to look light black or really just cheap black, but definitely a nice strong black that will blend really well with the tires. Any suggestion on Spray paint, which kind or another method?

Thanks for the help!! Love the forum!

Default Re: Advice on paint

I have painted a couple sets of wheels black. first was my 91 toyota. Done with high temp semi gloss black. I believe brand is duplicolor.

Second was my stock rims on the Tundra. Sprayed with automotive paint SEM hot rod black.

And third was a quick job on my cheapo winter rims/tires. Again using high temp semi gloss duplicolor. Its my favorite spray paint. seems to hold up pretty good. easy to touch up, and sprays nice.

Just remember to scuff the wheels so the paint adheres to them. Red 3m scotch brite works well for this. and clean them really good. Maybe these will give you some ideas.

sprayed a few sets of rims, learned real fast that in winter weather it doesn't hold up too well. however like erki said, it is really easy to touch them up. i'd reccommend that if these are your "good" rims and you want them to take a beating and good wear and tear, pay the price to get them powder coated. just check to make sure that your rims are made from a metal that can handle the cook-on temps. most toyota aluminum alloy's can though.

I second the notion to powder coat. You won't have to worry about chips in the paint etc. Just know that if your rims have the plastic center cap that this can't be powdercoated and you're going to have to try and color match with some spray on paint anyways.
