I have an 03 Tundra 4x4 with a 4.7 ltr. The truck came from the dealer with a system that allows you to flicker the highbeam lever one time to start the vehicle. It is some kind of theft deterrent. What you do is turn the key over once then you click the highbeam once and then the truck will start automatically.
My problem is that lately when I try to start it, it just does a clicking sound sometimes as if the battery was dead. Then I have to turn the key and flicker the highbeam over and over before it will start up. Other times it will just start right up as if nothing is wrong.
I tried calling the dealer and other mechanics and nobody can pinpoint the problem. Has anyone had this system on their vehicle or know what the problem might be. I am thinking its a relay going bad and hoping its not the starter/solenoid. Douglas

Sounds like your battery is on its last breath... (although it could be something wrong with your theft deterrent system, its easier to eliminate the more common probs first). If your battery is older, it may not be putting out enough Amps to crank your engine, especially in colder weather. The clicking you hear is probably your starter solenoid activating, which means your funky starting system is working fine. There's just not enough CCA (cold cranking amps) to make your starter motor spin. Test this by hooking up a battery charger, on starter (high amp) mode. Then try starting using your headlight trick. If it doesn't start, check your battery terminals to make sure they're clean. If it still doesn't start, you should bench test your starter motor (could be a faulty solenoid). If all this checks out ok... THEN try troubleshooting the "flicker start" system. Good Luck!
