Default 02' Tundra Power Steering Flush - Question?

I have searched around for a little bit for some advice on flushing the power steering fluid and filling with new and have not really found what I am looking for, so if need be this may turn into a little "How to DIY" thread.

I have an 02 Tundra AC V8 2WD and I have recently noticed the power steering pump makes a constant whinning noise. Hot, Cold, Idle, Driving, it basically always has this noise. The truck has 105K on it and was bought with 89K on it.

Since I have slowly been getting it to my likings! I just found out tonight that I have a LS Diff and have decided to change the oil in it. Since I am going to be going into town to buy Gear Oil I figure I may as well tackle the steering pump issue. I want to do a full Power Steering flush and refill with a synthetic oil as well.

My maintenance guide does not specify what kind of PS Fluid to use (I have not checked the cap on the resevoir yet) and I have heard that some models use ATF fluid while some use a PS fluid.

My next question would be how should I perform a PS flush? I have read that you jack up the front of the truck and disconnect the return hose (smaller one on bottom) and basically its the same concept as the tranny flush. Engine off, turn the wheel lock to lock a few time, fill the resevoir, repeat until you have clear fluid. Then reconnect line, top off with fluid. Start truck turn lock to lock a few times and check fluid, top off if needed.

Could someone please give me some advice as far as if I am "steering" in the right direction...lol bit of a pun there....

Also what kind of fluid to use....

Since I have not seen a "How to" on this here I will take pictures and make a small write up on it tomorrow, just want to make sure I am on the right track here!

Thanks,
override

Whatever happened with this flush? Were you able to get all the old fluid out without much trouble? I am about to do a similar flush and am searching for input. Thanks.

I have yet to do the flush, time ran out when I was up in kerrville and I have yet to do the job....I do however plan to do it sometime soon. When I do, I will let you know what I have figured out. From looking at it, seem that its actually quite simple. Jack up the front end so that its just off the ground enough to turn your wheels, pull the bottom hose (I think) off the resevoir. Turn your wheel from lock to lock until whats in the resevoir is gone, fill repeat. Should be a 2 quart flush to get clear, clean fluid...Top of resevoir and your done.

Dont quote me on any of this as I am not absolutely positive on these step, these are just some guess work and also from stray bits of info I had found about doing it. I am sure you don't want to get air in the system, so make sure you dont let the resevoir run completely out, prolly wouldn't hurt to have someone watch it for you as your turn the wheel.

When I do the job I will post up picks and a for sure "how to" guide.

Thanks. This is what happened when I did mine a couple of days ago...

Big OOps damage to power steering pump

I pulled the upper hose from the cooler. That one came straight from the reservoir... maybe I should have pulled the lower one.

So, make sure you do the wheel lock to lock engine off while in the air. Good Luck!
