    Default Locking Lug Nut broke

the corners of the locking lug nut broke, when I tried to take it off to swap winter tires. Now, I can't get the lock to hold so it will unscrew. Any ideas on how to get this off?? I tried channel locks, pipe wrench, I can't get hold of it enough to unscrew it.

A picture would be helpful. You may try large vise grips.
At least they have circled the problem.

Pictures would be helpful but you may try welding a regular nut to your locking lug nut and then break it loose. Of course you want to make sure you protect the wheel and get a good weld, and obviously the lug nut will be a total loss but you dont want this problem again anyways.

We could not find the "key" for the wifes sienna when we put the winters on last year. Fortunately I was at a tire shop and they had one off each tire in no time. I say stop by your local tire shop and do the same. At least call them. They will probably give you advise for free. Then get rid of the other ones at the same time. Personally I think those stupid locking nuts are the dumbest things ever invented.

I think I'll call a local garage this week. I'm not the first to do this, (people I'm sure have lost the Lock key too) I know there's a tool that does this.

    Thanks,
    Garth

What I've done and always worked is get a chrome 12 point 19mm socket and force it on with a hammer. It will slide on and fit tight. Next hit it with an impact and it will come right off. chuck socket up in a vise a punch the lock out.

Yep, just get a socket that's just slightly larger than the locking lug nut and hammer it in on to hold the lug nut as best you can. Then use either an impact wrench (preferred), or just the lug nut wrench to break it loose. You may need to try several times to get it off. Last time this happened, I was able to get 3 out of the 4 off on my wife's Lexus. But the 4th one was just too stubborn, and by then, my socket also was cracked on the edge. I finally took the 4th one to the local Discount Tires, and they charged $10 per lug nut which I thought was reasonable. Give it a try first before taking it to Discount Tires or some other tire/wheel specialist.

this same thing happened to me at discount when there were putting on my new tire for me and their smart way to get it off was to beat the hub and tire with a sledge hammer, when that did not work they tried to drill it off. i walked to the next door auto parts store and bought a lug not removal tool and got it off in like two mins. they had to pay for new alignment and hubs. just fly go to your auto part store and get that tool.

What brand were the locks? I keep the locks away from ANY IMPACT WRENCH USER and remove them first and install them last.

Working at a tire shop, there are sockets u can buy that have reverse grabbing teeth on it. Im sure you could buy at a parts store, or just goto your local tire shop, if you haven't already. Just dont put em back on.
