1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "2004 Tundra DC Test Drive", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Well i just got a chance to drive the all new 04 tundra d/c limited today and let's put it this way too overpriced for a truck(dealerships are overpricing or jacking up mrsp as they all do once it's this new) this truck uses drums on the back much less the power also didn't seem to match well for a tundra felt more like a seq on power handling and just didn't at all seem to grow on me very well. I felt like tundra on the d/c should have added more power and if one thing i was not impressed on with the brake layout used on the tundra d/c because i know very well using drums on the brakes isn't worth anything at all and more of a cost cutting factor from toyota motor sales and also it's prone to have issues just like every other tundra with brake problem's on the form..I just don't see this truck is changing the tundra image very well and feel toyota needs a redesigned tundra soon or if anything a newer 2nd gen iforce v8 with vvti and more power coming from a newer engine beyond that the tundra d/c did have good road manner's(a toyota trait) and was vault like quiet on term's of ride and handling and almost match that of the new 04 lexus ls430.......
Well i gave my opinion on the tundra what does everybody feel about the tundra d/c?????
I am keeping my tundra don't feel the new d/c is anything worth bragging about beyond the rear window that goes down which is a cool feature in itself that and my tundra almost payed off doesn't at all seem worth the added money and waste of money at that 41 k yikes get a clue toyota(overpriced) for 40k i would buy your lexus truck (lx470) not a toyota ...it is me or do cars and truck's seem to getting more every year?

I would first like to thank Bob Tyler Toyota for letting me be the first customer to test drive the new DC. My first impressions are as follows.
The truck looks awesome! I was worried that the 6 1/2ft bed would look akward but it was very eye catching. My first impulse was to look at how much room was in the back seat. I have a 13 year old son who is almost 6' and room is very important to him. It was almost as roomy as the Chevy avalanche but not as tall inside the cab. The sun roof as well as the sliding rear window makes it feel bigger than it is. (it was raining when I test drove this truck. The back window does not have a lip to stop water from dripping into the back seat area. You also have to hold the button down for the window to go all the way down.) I took a picture of one of the salesmen who is 6'4" and he felt very comfortable in the back seat. Getting into the back seat was very easy. The front seats are just like the current access cab and very roomy. The dash is the same with just a few minor adjustments for the center pod. If you are comfortable with the current Tundra, you will love this truck.
The truck doesn't feel under powered at all. It was very responsive. The brakes felt very good also. After all was said and done I left very satisified. I even drove by the Ford dealer slowly so they could get a glimpse. I am sold. This truck is not going to be for everyone, but if you want a truck that is built well than the New DC is a great choice. I will try to post some pics soon.
Did it feel clumsy because of the larger turning radius? In one of the magazines they mentioned that on steeper grades it was searching for the right gearing, did you notice this? Do you know if they changed the gearing in the DC because of the additional weight? What's pricing like?

The truck felt no different to me. It turned well, and had plenty of pep. Not many steep grades here in florida. Cant help there. It is not a fair comparison to my truck that has been modified. The sticker for the SR5 was at $30,000.00. That was MSRP. It did have Limited slip, off road package, painted fender flares and a few other items.
Nice review! I didnt think the V8 would be sluggish. Maybe the doublecab might lack in the towing dept, but while driving around it should be more than adequate. For towing/heavy hauling a bigger engine is in order. Unloaded, my V6 is plenty to get my 4000lb truck really moving!

Mine will have the Supercharger added at the dealer. That should take care of any doubts that I may have about hauling a boat!
$30k is cheap. many dealers are selling them for over msrp.
I'm sure that many dealers are going to make what they can. Nissan is going to put a $3000.00 adendum on the titan. I told the dealer he could keep it. Kinda of ugly up front.

$30K for an SR5 ain't bad - about what I was expecting in the first place. Adding the SuperCharger right up front will be cool - what a nice way to start out!
Still, it's too much truck for my current needs - but I'm not in the market for anything new either - just curious to what people's impressions are on the DC.
I Saw The New D/c Tundra Last Night At My Local Dealer In Baytown, Tx...and I'm On The Fence About This One. I Looked At A 2wd Limited With Trd, Dvd, Power Leather Seat, Limited Slip, Running Boards, Skid Plate, Tow Package. I Must Say It Was A Sharp Looking Truck...until You Raise The Hood. I Think I Will Keep My 2000 4wd Tundra Until They Come Out With A Bigger Engine. Imo Ford And Nissan Have Won This Round...
