1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "How many regular cab owners?", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I didn't know that the Tundra featured in the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie - T3 was a 2002, Regular Cab, 4WD, SR5, V8.
Just watched the movie for the first time, that Tundra took a massive Hollywood beating and kept on running.
I saw the movie for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I didn't realize the doggie ambulance was a Tundra at first. The rig in the back threw me off. I was looking for an Acc. Cab as well.
I own a white 2002 Reg Cab V8 (even got it with ABS brakes). I apparently got lucky and picked up someone else's order so I didn't have to wait for it. I have a little bit of envy over the double-cab's sunroof and power rear window, but those are minor things. I ended up with an ARE shell so I can lock my bikes up inside. The shell looks OK but visibility is a little difficult with double tinted glass in the rear view mirror. But it's great to be able to lock skis, snowboards, tandem bicycles, surfboards, etc inside and have them well hidden. My dog also enjoys having lots of window real estate to smudge.
The thing I'd like to upgrade the most is the seats. The center seat position just isn't all that useful, and I'd rather have more space for storage, stereo parts, or whatever I want to do with it. Anyone have experience swapping the seats out? It seems like far too much trouble so I haven't ever really pursued it. Dealership parts departments think I'm insane to suggest it, although from the looks of things all I need is a new passenger seat cushion and whatever hardware to attach it to the existing frame.
Speaking of stereo parts, regular cabs in general are difficult and the Tundra is no exception. I finally broke down and ordered some q-form kick panels, but beyond that I'm still thinking of what to do. All of the aftermarket parts other than the dash kits and kick panels are for access cabs. I'm just not a fan of those undersized seats.
Anyway, us reg cab V8 drivers are a rare group. I've only seen one other such truck since I bought mine. I have a small bit of double-cab envy, but to be honest, I'd probably rather have a Sequoia than a double-cab Tundra, just more space for long stuff. I figure trucks should be trucks, and I think the reg cab Tundra is the king of all trucks. It's lighter than any other full size reg cab, gets better mileage, feels more nimble, and is just small enough to be reasonable for city driving. I'd still like to have a 4 door sport sedan for driving people around or commuting to work, but for all of my recreational driving, both on and off the highway, the Tundra is king.
I had a 2001 EC and switched to a 2003 RC. I purchased it off the lot from carmax. It is an sr5 4x4 v8. The optional equipment included all weather gaurd, 3 in stereo with 4 speakers (all replaced), sr5 extra value package, towing package, and limited slip differential.
Some of my additions are new stereo and speakers, IS rims, bridgestone duelers 265/75's (really like these tires), wheelers coils, hellwig sway bar, trd dual exhaust, auto dimming mirror with compass, ventvisors, access roll up cover, and a few other things. Looks like I stuck too much into this thing but I still want more.
Things I plan on getting are color keyed rear bumper and mirror covers, and a new grille.
I have a few photos posted of my old and new trucks.

I pretty much share your views. I've had a 2001 Tundra 4WD Regular Cab for about 2 years and 20k miles. It has some good features, some not so good. Your comments about the seating are correct. The bench seat is very uncomfortable, especially for long trips. No power adjusts doesn't help. Trying to put three adults on that seat is miserable, even for short drives. The center console is just about useless. I agree also with your comments about the sound system. I know that aftermarket stereos are problems in regular cab trucks, so I paid extra and got the one that came with the Tundra. What a disappointment!
You are fortunate that you got ABS. I tried, but the dealer said they "weren't available," even though they were listed as an option. At least I haven't had any of the brake problems so frequently described on this board.
On the other hand, there's a lot to like about the Tundra. I haven't had a single thing go wrong with mine - J. D. Power and Consumer Reports indicate that Tundra is the most reliable of all the trucks, and I would readily agree. The ride is much better than other trucks - very smooth and quiet, more like a sedan. Power is OK, and I like the transmission. It's very easy to drive in heavy traffic, and the 8 ft bed is nice for hauling. The truck is solid and very well built, although the body and paint job show dents and dings very easily.
Anyway, we Regular Cab tundra owners are few and far between!
BTW, i just put an Access roll-up on my truck yesterday
They are 16's, same as stock rim. I put on a little larger tire 265/75 instead of 265/70, which added an inch in height. Those rims are the Ivan Stewart that most people don't like. I take them off in the winter, too much salt on the roads that will eat away at the finish.
Picked up my '04 reg cab SR5 V8 4X4 today. Not exactly a long-time owner: let's see, about four hours now!
I had to do some looking to find the reg cab.
I was going hot and cold on the access cab. What really clinched it for me was Toyota charging just under $3,000 more for the bigger cab. Maybe a grand, but three grand? I just thought the reg cab SR5 was a much better value.
By any chance are any of you RC owners looking for a LEER Hi-Top cap?
I have one available. like new, Thunder Grey. Pop out rear window.
Battery operated dome light. Factory tint. Check my items for sale.
Thanks
How do you think the thunder gray leer shell would look with a silver sky body? I have some interest but $ are tight since I just ponied up for the ex-warranty on my 02 and dropped some Michelin Cross-Terrains on it. How firm are you are on the 900 asking? Maybe in a couple of months we can work a deal. I'm in Chapel Hill, NC so its not to far a drive. Also meant to ask you what the braking set-up is on your 96. Were they using taco brakes before they started building them in Princeton? Thanks, Nicholas
2000 Reg cab no options, got it in 2002 for 13k with 24,000 on it. I have the 100,000 Certified warranty which I used for the first time Dec 30 2003 They replaced the water pump, powersteering pump and camshaft seals. (I was not aware of any problem with them) they said they were failing.
I put a killer Kenwood system in with a MiniDisk changer, woofers, mids & ribbon tweeters behind the bench. it rocks! the truck has 50,000 on it and runs like new.
Theres pictures of the system somewhere here, I don't remember where.

well, I guess I finally joined the ranks! I just signed off on a V8 SR5 Regular Cab through CarsDirect.com (very pleasant experience). I had to go as far afield as Phoenix ( I live in northern NM); they will ship it this week. I did have to settle for Desert Sand, though.
