sorry if this is what Toyota really wants to call the next Tundra for 2006 i will be looking elsewhere..It has some nice styling on certain bits but the whole truck looks like a ford superduty on steroids. please Toyota come up with something better than this! ...Sadly i think if Toyota wanted a better truck this is not something i would expect much less want to drive....LOOKS like toyota lost my vote this time around. what a waste of money and time, looks like the nissan titan isn't that ugly after all. the new 06 tundra has my vote on that....
It is very rare tht we see a concept car sneak through the cracks into retail. But if it does....trust me...it won't look anything like this car/truck/ or whatever the hell it is!! haha I would rather Toyota be spending money on developing a nice 5.7L V8 for the next generation Tundra, oh...and for the next Tundra..PLEASE BRING BACK THE STEEL BUMPERS!!!
Hold on here. This is supposed to be a Tundra enthusiasts site. We generally like the Tundra and want to see Toyota go in the right Direction, agreed? What specifically do you like and not like from the pictures? What direction do you think Toyota should go in? Perhaps make categories - Engines, cab configurations, transmissins, suspensions, capacities, bed configurations, etc. Perhaps we can RE and RE this puppy as to what we like and don't like and lets be honest, mature, and objective about it. Perhaps after all is done we could email this thread to Toyota and basically say "take it (our advice) or leave it." And if they want to go on their own tangent, well rememeber people walk with their feet right?
Remember that a concept vehicle is designed to expose concepts to people. Sometimes these concepts are appreciated right away. Sometimes concepts take a while to grow on people, or need to be developed. Much like good music. Some songs are catchy right away, some take a while to listen to grow on you, and some just plain suck! There are some things I can say on this truck from looking at the pictures for about 10 minutes that have grown on me, but there are some things I dislike as well. But maybe it'll grown more and more on me.
I for one don't mind the front end and grill. Think it's pretty brauny, but I don't assosciate it with the Super Duties like some here say. It appears original. Also, the truck is bigger than it appears. You can tell. It is 228 inches long, which is almost as long as the DC. Driver and rear cab side windows are extra sleek which gives off the appearance that this truck is smaller than it actually is. I don't care for the side view mirror design - think something more functional (at least in appearance - maybe these are functional ,but they don't have the appearance such a the new Dodge side view mirrors that have the option of extending them for when you are towing). I don't care for the rounded tail gate and think the rear bumper looks, um, different. Sort of like a big a$$ or something? Would like to see both bumpers rounded around the side rear and front fender like they traditionally are, and to take on the stainless look - plastic looks like sh*t! The cab configuration in terms of seating space appears to have the size of or near that of the current double cab, at least in terms of rear leg room, with the configuration of an access cab. What I do like about the interior is it appears Simple. This is something that I appreciate. I like knobs, not buttons. And I like to have everything that is neccessary, but nothing that isn't neccessary IE no clusterf*cks! At the same time some of the interior looks to spacey and futuristic - not my cup of tea. The front buckets look weird and don't do it for me. The rear sets are I guess ok, but what is up with that chrome piece in the middle, do you want person #5 in the truck sitting on a chrome piece?. Would your work crew want to sit in those? That little angled piece of plastic on the front bucket would get sawed off right away! Who cares if it helps hold the seat up or keep you from falling out! I like the look of the tires, but the positioning of the rear tires makes the bed appear really short. Is it short? or with that length of truck is it still around 6 feet (which I'd imagine it is)? I'm not sure how I feel about the, what appears to be, grey plastic there on the rocker panels and how it sort of compliments the truck. I am indecisive on that one for now. I kind of like the two tone colour of the new F-150's and how the rocker panel area is a different colour (but a straight different colour from wheel to wheel).
I think one of the main criticisms of the Tundra is it's lack of configurations, and I think this is the plain truth. But I don't think that the Tundra should go the route that Ford has gone in offering a double cab with only one bed ("small") size.
The truck picture as I think already itereated appears to be a BIG access cab. There appears to be actual leg room in the back, comparable to other trucks double cabs. But at the same time people like 4 full doors and not having to open up the front doors for the rear passengers to get out. I sort of like the statement that Dodge made when they offered only a regular cab and double cab in their current line of trucks. But at the same time comments in here suggest that the new Tundra double cab received favourable comments for it's easily accessible rear seats by many compared to that of other double cabs offered by the Big 3 or Titan, even though some of those other double cabs had more cab volume! I would imagine the length of the rear doors and rear leg room had a lot to do with the pure length of the double cab and hence why there was much favour in the rear seating. But not everyone wants to own a 230 inch double cab 1/2 ton truck, so where do you draw the line?
I think Toyota should keep things simple for their 1/2 ton market, unless they prove that there is serious demand for the double cab. It would be interesting to do a survey on how many people are in for the leg room/seating space for the double cab, regardless of type of entry (eg four full doors to that of an access cab style).
1/2 tons Cab Configurations - Regular cab, BIG ACCESS Cab.
Bed Cofigurations - 6 1/2 foot and 8 foot for Reg cab, 6 1/2 foot and 8 foot for BIG access cab.
Engines - Offer the 4.0 litre V6, Tweak the 4.7 litre V8 a bit for more HP, offer the V8 Hybrid, and a 5.5 or 5.7 (depending on who you hear from?) V8.
Offer more for the bigger capacity trucks
3/4 and 1 ton
Cabs - Regular cab, BIG ACCESS cab, Double cab.
Bed Configurations - 8 foot or 6 1/2 foot for all cab configurations (and hopefully duallies).
Engines - Offer a BIG BASE V8 (5.5 or 5.7, again depending on who you talk to), and a Diesel. No V10, don't waste your time. BIG V8's are proving enough to suffice now a days me thinks, as long as you produce a reasonably efficient drive train, unlike some trucks out there, with ahem, a V8, cough with 345 horsepower, cough, cough, spit.
I guess I am asking that if Toyota wants to consider the truck market seriously, they have to do something they rarely do - offer customization. Us Guys (and some gals) are picky about what we get in our trucks. We at the same time appreciate Toyota quality and hope that Toyota maintains it's excellence in this aspect.

I hated it at first but looking at it I think it is kinda nice..but I still dont like the interior at all. They just need to sand it down a little more and drop those window sills about 4 inches and I think it would be a hit.

very much enjoyed reading this opinion from you and very well spoken for..I guess for one i agree with you 100 percent on your opinion of tundra not having the right package to their customers much less in their lineup...Toyota also hasn't gotten the tundra right like we see nissan doing with the titan. if anything toyota hasn't packaged the tundra to meet the needs of their customers. as we can see that today as a double cab that has a very weak engine and doesn't meet the needs of the growing customers that buy them...I feel if toyota wanted to redesign the Tundra they need to speak directly to there customers instead of creating a truck like this that has no real value at all and is truly pure concept .... as a few pointed out this concept may very well find bits and pieces on the next generation of tundras. time will tell if toyota will have hints of this concept on the next tundra due out in 06 or 07...

I would like to see the doors as shown. Rear foreward opening or "suicide" doors. However, I would like to see the rear door have the ability to open independantly of the front. A safety feature might include a locking mechanism that allows the rear door to open when the key is in the off position. If the rear door would swing all the way out like the Titan, that would be cool too.
Overall, I like it. I think the body style is nice, in general. I don't care for the roll pan style back end though. I'd rather see real bumpers. I think the built in ramp is a great idea, especially for someone hauling dirt bikes.
The interior has got to be simply an exercise by the Toyota concept people to make it look as much like an episode of Star Trek as possible. I don't like that. I see a center mounted shifter though. I think that if Toyota isn't going to offer a a 3 person front bench seat, they might as well put the shifter there. That is one thing I really like about the 4-Runner. I think that, if produced, this will be a nice truck!
Keep in mind that a production version will be toned way down. I didn't notice projected hp or weight. Was it there?
