Who here tows with the Tundras? I bet most of you don't. So why is the engine in the DC "weak"? I towed my Supra (~5,000 pounds with the trailer) to the Las Vegas Supra meet with my 100% stock 2003 Access cab V8, it had PLENTY of power. On some of the uphills I was blowing by slower traffic at 90+ MPH.
VERY few people actually NEED (not want or desire) more power. Next time you are out count the number of non-comercial pickup trucks on the road, then count the # of them that are towing or hauling more than the Tundra can handle. I have tons of friends with trucks, only one uses his to tow something the Tundra can't handle (10,000 toy hauler). For that he uses a 2002 F250 Powerstroke. He would get a 3/4 ton Tundra if they had one as he is a Toyota man.

Your formula is not right. To save $8,000 going to a 26 MPG vehicle as opposed to a 17 MPG vehicle at $1.50 a gallon it will take about 262,000 miles ($23,117 worth of gas for the 17 MPG vehicle with gast at $1.50 a gallon and $15,115 for the 26 MPG vehicle at the same $1.50 a gallon).
BTW I love the FTX concept truck. You guys need to keep in mind that production vehicles are always toned way down from the concept vehicles. Concept vehicles are radical and bold to GRAB attention at the shows.

At $1.50/gallon, and assuming 17mpg for a regular truck, and 26mpg for a hybrid:
First, we change miles per gallon into miles per dollar
(26/1.50) = 11.33 (miles per $1)
(17/1.50) = 17.33 (miles per $1)
Now we find the difference for $1 of fuel
17.33 - 11.33 = 6 (this is the difference in miles per $1)
Now to see how far you would have to drive before you saved $8000
6 x $8000 = 48,000 miles.
Wow this was fun. Feel free to use this formula to figure out if your next fuel efficient car is worth the money. I'll make a formula below.
|(a-b)/x|s = D
a is mpg of vehichle 1
b is mpg of vehichle 2
x is the price of gas
s is the extra money you'll spend on a hybrid
D is the distance you would have to travel to save that extra money
Don't forget your absolute value bars! =)
UGLY??? The Avalanche and Escalade got built - those things are UGLY!!! Way uglier than the Titan.
I think the FTX is kind of cool, space age, a truck for George Jetson.
Powerplants??? Anyone remember what powers a locomotive? Yes a diesel electric hybrid, must be a reason for that...
Brad
PS I am writing from Dallas by way of OK City...Texas is Tundra Country??? I see 50 Tundras a day in little ol Bakersfield. I haven't seen 50 in 10 days in OK or Texas...what's up??
You got a point with the Avalanche, the Titan and it are in a heated battle for ugliest truck in the world...
Toyota is building the new Tundra plant in San Antonio TX to penetrate that market better as it is "truck" country...

no Tundras in texas? damn i hope possum isn't reading this post. he might have to make sure you are heading in the right part of Texas and good luck there since we all know texas is rather big and thinks big (bigger is better in the case of Texas)
I like the front end except the mirrors. It strongly resembles a cross between the new Dodge Ram and the F-150. The tires are bad a$$ looking and at least they have gone away from B.F. Goodrich for their concept version and gone with Goodyear. The idea of steps that open when you open the door and are then concealed when it closes gives it a much more streamlined appearance. Something else to go wrong? - maybe. From a maintenance standpoint (washing and waxing) I like the fender flares integrated into the rest of the body for a very sleek look and no seams. The moon roof is a nice touch but here in the desert I can take them or leave them.
They need to add height to the cab - it looks too squatty like it is. I don't care for the back end unless this is supposed to be a "sporty" version sort of like a stepside - then I might buy it. The interior looks like the inside of a Seattle ferry which I sat in way too many times commuting to work - thank God they served beer. The jury is still out in regards to the hybrid engine for me. I drove the Prius when my wife was looking for a new car and hated it. Probably a good idea for a car for kids to drive to school, but not for driving in freeway traffic in most big cities.
Obviously, this concept will undergo many changes before any of us can buy one, but I think they are starting down the right track. I'd like to see underneath and see what it has for suspension.

I must have missed this thread previously - and I haven't been to Toyota's site for a few months, so I haven't seen this concept truck yet.
I actually really like the design. Not as a pickup truck, but more as a sport ute. It appears to have that beefier stance and styling that the new Nissan Murano/Infiniti FX now has. If Nissan was smart, they would have adapted this styling to the Titan instead of the angular turd with a chopped-off back that they came up with.
I don't see this as a replacement design for any existing truck in Toyota's line-up - rather an addition as a sport truck. I'm sure it won't be cheap so I won't have to worry about being the first guy on the block to have one in my driveway, but I do like the concept.
I just heard that most of the execs at Toyota love the new FTX. I'm not sure what that means as far as production, just what my friend told me after he attended a meeting on Friday.

let's just hope they don't build it (butt ugly like that of the new titan)...F.e on the ftx is ok but the rest of the truck is weird and stupid looking....

Don't worry - I'm sure they'd sell more here in California than in Georgia anyway!
