    Default Towing

I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra DC and was adivsed of a towing problem involving the transmission. My mechanic told me that there was a technical service bulletin reference some part in the transmission that cannot handle a load of more than 3500 lbs if I plan on towing said load regularly. I cannot find anything about this for myself. The repair is going to cost a little over 900 dollars.
Has anyone heard of this or am I getting ripped off.
I will try to get more info on what the specific part in the transmission is for more info. I want to say it was an output shaft but am not 100% sure.
Ohh and the reason I ask I because I am looking to purchase a travel trailer and want to make sure that I can tow it. Its gvw is 3850lbs.

I believe the problem involves some kind of bearings in the overdrive (4th) gear. Just turn off overdrive while towing.

I would have that mechanic dig up the TSB before going through with that repair. Like Tugga said , I think that was pre '04.

I used to own and operate a landscaping business and a tree service and used my 2004 DC to tow all kinds of loads WAY over-gross without a single problem. Always tow with over drive off and you should not have any problems.

Your mechanic is incorrect in his advice and I second the motion for production of the TSB regarding this "issue."

yea the issue with the trans was for 00 to 02 and i believe it involved the Torrington bearing cages that are a part of Overdrive and they would come apart and chew up the rest of the trans. But this shouldn't affect your truck.

I have an 2000 that I tow my race car with, the car and trailer are 5000-lbs plus a loaded truck bed. I turn off Over-drive when I tow. Should I still have concern? Would rather get a more capable tow vehicle than drop $900 into this one. It seems to do okay when towing in general, but it does struggle a good bit when traversing mountains.

Do it no matter what. If you believe in it, it is something very honorable. If somebody around you or your family does not understand it, then that's their problem. But if you do have a passion, an honest passion, just do it.

I have contacted the mechanic on this and am waiting a reply...I will let you know what I hear. The local dealership advisor said he didn't know of any TSB relating to this but did not instill the most confidence with his answer.

Good advice - Turning off O/D when towing.

My Tundra an 01 has the V-6 engine, I live in the country and tow a heavy trailer with large round hay bales,

been doing it since I bought it and always turn off the O/D when hauling anything
