Default 2006 tundra is only getting 11 miles per gallon! help any ideas why?

bought a new used 2006 tundra dc, running only 265 75 16, 4.7l, just under 75k, trd package. I'm getting 11 mpg in town and maybe 15 on the highway. I drive like a grandpa. I thought I would get at least 15-18. the truck seems fine but I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the mpgs. Any ideas what could be wrong or what to look for to improve the mpgs? Any help on this would be very helpful.
ps I changed the spark plugs to start. what's next?

Clean the throttle body, new air cleaner, make sure rear brakes are not dragging, clean/replace pcv, maximum air in tires, make sure you have no CEL codes pending. New front O2 sensors?

Well, it's a truck...Your mileage is going to suck. The fact that it's a Tundy is going to make it suck even more. Your mileages seem pretty close to what mine are. I get about 14 combined with about 50/50 driving in town/highway. It's the middle of the winter, it's a V8, my foot seems to gain weight when it rests on that gas pedal, etc... Plain and simple, these trucks are not known for their mileage. Simple things you could try are check your tire pressures or run some seafoam through. Any trouble codes? Most likely the problem lies directly behind the steering wheel...

winter blended gasoline really kills the mileage. I usually get 17-18 cause I drive slow, but now in cold weather with winter blend gas I am getting around 12-14.

Yeah me too, if I drive about 50/50 streets/freeway I get about 14 combined. So depending on you're local ethanol blend its very possible to get mpgs like what you have.

I would also change the plugs if it hasn't already been done and check the condition of your fluids like diff and transmission. As has already been stated this truck is not miserly and time of year and fuel quality play a huge role in your mpg's. I've often considered creating a little piggy fuel gauge that lights up and squeals when I step on the gas. I run an ultra-gauge and the numbers I see when I get on the gas aren't pretty. I mean merging mpg's are in the 4 range and slight inclines at speed also cut it in half even when the throttle isn't being used hard. I think that toyota should've put a picture of pinochio on the epa label for this truck because I've never seen their highway estimate for as long as I've owned this truck.

My last fillup, with about all short trip in town driving, I got 11.5 MPG.

    Combined I get 14 or 15.

All highway, with no load, no trailer, I have seen 16 or 17 MPG.

Way back in 1999 and even before the Tundra was being designed, gas was under $1.79 a gallon. Shoot, I remember in August, just before Katrina in 2005, gas was $1.79. Ever since Katrina, it has not been that low since. Manufacturers didn't really care about MPG back then.

I'm running the same size tire as the OP. When my speedometer is on 60 MPH, my GPS says 62. The 75 is slightly taller than the 70. My Average MPGS is normally mid 14s. I'm thinking that since the speedometer is slightly off, maybe I am getting a little better than mid 14s?

I can't seem to get over 15 mpg in my 05 Access Cab. It's aggravating, especially for this college student filling up his gas tank once a week.

http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forum...tems-to-check/ might be a good place to start with maintenance.

So far this winter I am right at 15 MPG tank average and this includes warm-ups in the morning to defrost the windshield and warm the cab of the truck before I put my son in there. Looking to do the electric fan mod before spring and install headers as soon as the weather warms up enough.

I hope you bought a Tundra because you needed a truck and not for the outstanding gas mileage it is NOT known for.

The title of this thread should be changed to "help I bought a known gas guzzler yet I cannot figure out why I'm getting bad mileage." These mpg threads are well.
