1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "New Hybrid Toyota Pickup?", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Ok, I'm sure this has to be BS, but I was talking to a friend that works for Toyota, and he said that he heard that Toyota is going to put out a hybrid pickup.
He said that it will have a good sized gas engine, AND an electric motor, for more instant torque and better mileage.
The FTX truck that Toyota introduced at the 2004 North American International Auto Show is a hybrid.
I didn't read it in the thread about that truck, but it got an award from some publication as the most significant vehicle at the show. I saw it on some show on The Speed Channel.
Msn.com had a link with sound some time back and the truck sounded great but I don't remember it saying that it was a hybrid.

Anyone else gotten wind of this?
I did see a story of a hybrid Highlander SUV on A toyota site for 2005

Motor Trend's recent truck issue report a 5.8 L 360 hp with 400 ft/lbs as a 2006 model. It also spoke of the hybrid model which I feel is a certainty because of Toyota's recent dealings with Ford Motor Company and the ability to make a 3.3 L V6 with 408 hp and 435 miles on a 13.7 gallon tank.
As for me, 3 years with my truck is enough for a carnal connection that will never be broken. I absolutley love this truck and will never let it go. Too many good and bad memories.
on the new hybrid Tundra? I see they are introducing the Highlander this fall and would hope they are updating the Tundra this fall instead of waiting till 2006.
NOTATION: The thread "Any word...." has been merged with " New Hybrid Toyota Pickup?" as they pertain to the same topic matter. --- Possum

Toyota and Ford... ! Power potential but what about quality and durability, unless Ford had turned that around so well that its changed their long time reputation.

Relax... the "dealing" has been Toyota selling their hybrid technology to Ford since Ford's own program wasn't coming along well enough to get something to market any time soon.

That reminds me of back then when Ford was using Mitsubishi engines on some of their passenger cars. That'll definitely help Ford since Toyota rawks! I'm relieved to know that its not the other way around.

I read it wasn't actually the technology, it was the a few pattent rights. Ford will be able to use a few of the ideas Toyota has pattents on, but they will be developing the systems themselves. Take that as you will...

Thats 32 mpg! I dont know if I believe that. The highlander hybrid will get 28mpg with "only" 270 hp. And I hope thats a solid 28mpg and not an EPA 28mpg (really 22mpg). I dont know why they dont make a 200 hp 4cyl/electric highlander that gets 40 mpg. Thats what Id buy. Who needs 270 hp in a camry (basically)?
And who wants a 14 gallon tank on a truck? Give me a hybrid with a 40 gallon tank. Or 2x25 gallons. I want 1200 mile range so I can fill up when gas is cheap and drive for 2 months.
If toyota sells technology to ford, that still means ford will have to build it, wrap it in ford chassis, interior, etc. FWIW.
At our DFW meet, the Tundra marketing director did say a hybrid Tundra is in the works. He quoted some insane numbers for torque, but I don't remember what they were. Hope someone else that was there and heard what he said might jump in with numbers.
