1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Converted to a Tundra!", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
These trucks speak for themselves! I just got my wedding vows renewed throught hte church this past weekend and my best man is a die-hard Chevy man. He used to tell me before I had my Tundra that they were crappy and they will never be as good as a Chevy! He refused to even set foot in one and I used to tell him it is cause he knows he will like what he sees. Well, as tradition has it, he and his wife (Maid of Honor in the wedding) had to choaffer (Spelling?) me and my wife after the ceremony. Well, I of course had to set it up so that he would have to drive the Tundra. As we pulled out of the Church, no more than 1 mile out, he turns to his wife and says, Well I want one." She asked, "One, what?" His next words were, "One of these trucks!" My jaw dropped! I had taken him for a couple of drives before this date but this was the first time he got to drive it! He is 100% in love with it! He wants to get rid of his Siverado for one when he gets back from Turkey!
My Mother-in-law has a 00 Siverado 4X2 and I let her drive it too! She too wants to get one! I took her off road with it to show her what a 4X4 is all about. She had a blast! Went up a 45 degree hill that was all muddy with no problem and she was shocked that it could make it. I just thought you'd like to hear a great story about two individuals that have seen the greener grass!

Excellent story! I love hearing about new converts. My dad is a classic die-hard Ford man from the dawn of 4-wheel travel. I let him drive my 2001 when I first got it last year (used) and the first thing out of his mouth was how nice the transmission shifted. I was shocked!

My wife and I started to look to trade my 97 F-150 in February. We made a list of what was important to us and researched all makes and models. I stated in the beginning that the new Ford SuperCrew was going to be the hands down winner of our study. We considered everything. Since I had no major problems with the current Ford, I was biased big time. To make a long story short, a D/C Limited Tundra will be parked in my garage by the end of next week. I have had a Chevy, then a Ford and was going back for more. I had no idea what I have been missing. Some critics speak of the tow rating, the drum brakes on the back, but it tows more than 99% of truck owners really need and it stops faster than almost all of them. I didn't even want to test drive a Tundra, but I did and that was all she wrote. Wow. You could badge it as a Lexus and it would be totally appropriate. Bye bye Ford. Me a convert? You bet and I am one tough sell !!! I can't wait to get it !!!
I to am a convert from the big three. I have driven ford , chevy, and dodge quite a bit due to work. I thought i really wanted another ford when i went to trade in my 99 ford. Well on the way to the ford dealer I stopped in at toyota and test drove the tundra out of curiosity more than anyhting I never made it to the ford dealer I took the tundra home that day. I do alot of off roading and its capabilities is what has really susprised me. I just wished toyota offered the electronic locking axle on the 4x4
Die hard Chevy owner here until I drove a Tundra! Traded my 97 Cheyene 2500 Lemon in for a 2000 Tundra and am very happy I did. Had nothing but trouble with the Chevy including transmission rebuild and 1 year later replacement of rebuilt transmission not to mention the constant brake problems it had. Miss the big V8 a little but the Tundra V6 has a lot of go power and I don't work construction any more so the ability to carry heavy cargo isn't as important.
Wife has had Toyota cars for many years and I had a Celica many years ago when I was a lot younger with no family to cart around so I knew about the quality of Toyota products they just didn't have a truck big enough for me until the Tundra came along.
The first I do when comparing vehicles is look at resale value. It tells you two things: reliability and demand for that vehicle. Tundra comes out tops, and there is a good reason for that - they are great trucks. I did my due diligence by looking at some other trucks and none of them came close except for the Nissan Titan - but it is too gas hungry for my liking and it is too early to tell how reliable they really are. The Chevy's and GMC's were heavily discounted from their MSRP's and that was a good clue too. I avoided Dodge entirely because my B.I.L. swears he will never buy one again.
i was a ford guy, always wanted a ford, so when it came time for me to get a truck, i got a ranger, very bad idea. had a ton of break problems put 3 sets of rotors on in 25k miles. 2 or 3 oil leaks, new radiator it craked. gas leek, was fillin up and was like damn it smells like gas, was standin in a puddle. had a bunch of other problems dont even remember half of them. and this was a bran new truck. o and right after i got it they droped it off a lift and messed it up pretty good. bad luck i have with trucks, and i hate steelerships even more. never goin back to american.
matt
I got my Tundra after having initially taken a test drive in a Sonoma. I hated the poor transfer of power from the engine in that Sonoma. Then I looked at Dodges.. the sales people really turned me off -- they were trying to sell me some stuff I didn't need for the truck. Same went for GMC dealership -- they would keep calling me and throwing in incentives that I didn't really see a use for on the Sonoma I was considering and jacking the price at the same time.
Then came the Toyota salespeople. Wow. It was a night and day difference -- they guided me through the vehicle sales lot and let me sit in a Tacoma initally -- was too small for my big body frame -- I'm 210 pounds and 5'10". They then led me over to the Toyota Tundra 2003 4x4 (which I obviously bought later on), it was an excellent fit. Only worry was the back seat.. a little short on space but I wasn't too concerned about that as I knew I'd bring backseat passengers only on short trips when glancing back there. I had no idea they were bringing in the Double Cabs until later on in October around there back in 2003. The sales person who sold me the truck gets an ovation for honesty and integrity for selling me a truck. I am the only one in my family who owns a Toyota! My relatives have been raving about how nice my truck looks in the sun, the color and the ride. I'm glad I chose Toyota, no problems and I have over 15,000 km on the odometer (it came with just 10km on the odometer when I bought it!)
"There is NO WAY on God's green earth that I'm buying any damm rice burner!!"
or so I told my wife last July when she presented me with her proposal to replace her '89 Ford Taurus with a Sequoia. I couldnt' even believe she'd suggest that, knowing how I felt. But, she had very well thought out, researched, and presented proposal that I could not ignore. She brought me reviews, reliability, and resale value info and articles.
After about a month of argueing, I could see the writing on the wall that I was not going to win this one. One day she sprung the "I want to sit down and talk with you tonight and work this out once and for all". oh NO! The dreaded "TALK".
that day over lunch I test drove the Sequioa.....hey! this is kind nice!...smooth ride, EXTREMELY quiet, plenty of power, very refined...I guess this ain't so bad.
That night after dinner she indicated it was time to "talk". She started her argument again and I cut her off in mid sentence, simply saying "ok".
Not only did I avoid "the talk", I got major husband points for giving in (probably not as many as I lost in the previous month of arguing, but it was a start). We picked it up week later and I've been jealous of her ride ever since. At least she lets me wash, polish, wax, and maintaine it! I love the truck and I must say, she looks might fine in it!
A few weeks ago I looked down at the odometer of my '96 Dodge Grand Caravan (on it's 3rd transmission) and it read 151,000. Hmmmmm....I think I'm about due! I presented MY arguement to my wife, expecting a battle in retaliation for my resistance a year earlier, but to my surprise, she was more excited about than I was.
I told her that after 8 years of driving a minivan, I needed a truck to build my testosterone level back up. She assured me that I had no deficiency in that area, but agreed that I'd look good in a new Tundra.
I've called the dealer we bought the Sequoia from and he said he could sell any Tundra on the lot for invoice. This week I hope to test drive one, and I suppose I should test out a F150 and a Silverado, though when we bought the Sequoia it was the only vehicle I tested drove. I'm done with Dodge's after this minivan and the Nissan Titan is just too ugly for my tastes.
I'm tempted to wait for '05s but I really want the 1.9% interest being offered. I suppose I dont' NEED a truck this year, but I sure want one. Two payments won't be fun though.
On a similar note, my wife and two of neighbor gals went out and tested minivans. One of the gals is looking for one and the other wants wanted the new Honda Odessy. They tested the Odessy, Sienna, and the Nissan Quest and they came back with an unanimous verdict that the Sienna was clearly the best vehicle of the three. One neighbor has all but decided to buy one and wants to shop our purchases together as a package to see if we can get a bit more knocked off the price.
We'll have to see how it goes. I'm 99% sure I'll get a new Tundra, but it's 50/50 on whether it's this summer or next summer.
I drove my friends new fully loaded GMC Danali pickup last week. I didn't want to make him feel bad, but wow,,a Toyota it ain't. Rough ride, cheezy interior, loud interior noise level, Etc. It felt strange also with the rear end steering in a parking lot.
It didn't take much for my family to become converts to Toyota. After my parents had terrible experiences with a 1990 Chevy Lumina, and 1994 Ford Taurus my Mom got her "dream car" a 1998 Toyota Camry. She drives it all the time and since she bought it used in 1998 (it was a used executive lease vehicle) and has put on about 45,000 plus miles on it.
It took longer for me to get into the Tundra I wanted. Before my Tundra I drove a Sh**ty S-10. It was a mess. I had to put in new valve assemblies in it every 3000 miles and the third time it had a new transmission put in. The oil guage stopped working. It would behave like a tachometer with rapid movement whenever accelerating. I could bang the S-10 all day, and I was glad I got rid of it when I got my Tundra.
Originally when I went down to the dealership with my mother (Mean Queen Haggler) I was looking at the Matrix. I liked the car, and it was my mother (who secretly wanted a Tundra all along) who said I should look at what I wanted. After getting sticker shock from looking at a fully loaded Sequoia, I looked at the Tundra. I chose a color I liked, Desert Sand, and took the truck for a demo. That is all it took. I've had my truck since July 18th of 2003.
just to throw another conversion story out there. I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado Z71 right now. and i went to go drive a tundra 4x4 the other day, and MAN i was converted. lol
my first thought was, man my truck rides ROUGH. the tundra is super smooth(even a 4x4 TRD model) compared to my jarring Z71 shocks.
I wish i had looked at the tundra last year when i bought my truck, but was stupidly stuck in my GM loyalty. big mistake, that tundra I drove blows my chevy outta the water!
It looks like i will be driving an 05 Tundra around spring time or maybe winter. can't wait!
