Default Access Cab Vs Double Cab?

Anyone still prefer their Access cab Tundra even after driving or owning the Double cab model? Its just that after the D cab was introduced the talk on this site is like its better in every aspect compared to all the other models. I'm actually of the opinion that the smaller access cab has many advantages over the bohemouth D. cab. I admit, the passenger space is excellent in the bigger truck and seems more of a luxury vehicle or SUV with a bed. However, as far as handling, off road ability, turning radius, quickness, mpg, parking ability ect. the Access cab is still, in my opinion, the best compromise of any of the tundra models. Maybe I'm compleatly wrong about this and I respect anyone elses opinion on the subject. Further, perhaps the changes to the engine, tranny for 05 will make the differences between the two less noticeable?

When I bought mine I had the option to hold out 4-5 months and get the double cab. We have a 4runner so the need for long distance comfort wasn't a factor. With 2 kids 13 and 11 the access cab works perfect....and it fits in my garage.
AC is still best choice for us. With VVTI and 5sp auto, the additional weight factor is a non issue IMO (power)...just a bit better handling, turning radius, and parking are AC advantages.

No, your absolutely correct. The Access Cab is the best configuration and best light duty truck of all time.

Thumbs up Double Cab Prefered

Unfortunatley I had service problem with my D cab and had a few Access cab loaners. Right a way I noticed that you lose in the bed as for the size. I guess once you had a double cab it's hard to go to some thing smaller.

i bet i could get a dcab the same places offroad that ive taken my acab, maybe with a couple more points in a couple more turns, but for the most part, same truck but a little longer. need/want the room? go dcab.

for comparison, we got a crew cab 2500 with an 8' bed through the maze, and the guy plans on taking it through elephant hill next time.

Ive got a regular cab. I fit all kinds of stuff (tarps, tools, bungees, etc) behind my seat and none of it can be seen like it would if you have it in the back of the access cab. Obviously I cant put people back there but unless you have rugrats no one wants to sit behind someone 6'3" in any ext cab truck. In a few years when its time for my next truck, its gonna be a DC or Titan Crew.

Default It Depends...

Got an '03 Access Cab...just rolled over 25K miles this morning. Had the chance to test drive the DC a few times. Good reasons to choose either, depending on what you're doing.

My AC is my daily driver. The heaviest work for this truck is hauling a load from Home Depot or helping a friend move. I like the AC for urban use because of the shorter overall length. I just fit the entrance into my parking garage in Pasadena. Getting a DC in would be a nerve-wracking experience. It also helps that my kids are old enough to drive their own cars and wouldn't be caught dead riding anywhere with me...that AC backseat is only good for about 10 minutes before the passengers start serious grousing. I should also point out that the AC fits in my garage...the DC won't.

If I were not driving in an urban area during the week, or if I needed to haul family with my truck, I'd move to the DC in a heartbeat (well, at least as soon as I extended the garage). To be honest, I like the bigger look, the extra interior space, and the larger bed of the DC. It's just that the AC is a much better choice for me right now...and the fact that the AC is paid for...don't want another car payment before I absolutely have to go there.

I looked at the access cabs when the first hit the market back in 1999-2000. Great looking truck. By that time, the Tacoma had already had a double cab out in production. I told myself the year the Tundra makes a double cab will probably the time for a new truck. Well, the time came and went in April of 2004 and I chose the double cab. I have no regrets. It's was difficult to get use to coming from a Tacoma Ext Cab into a Tundra double cab. The turning radius and parking can be challenging at times. However, it's worth it. Especially when your 6'4" and the wife is 6'2". I love my Tundra DC 4wd. I wouldn't trade it for any truck right now.

Default DC vs Access?

All our needs are different. For me it was just the fact that my 95 Runner was always just a little cramped for passengers. So to be sure there was plenty of room for my 2 yr old daughter and 80 yr old mother on those long trips to the Northwest, I chose the DC. Went with 4wd cause there are some fishing spots in Central Oregon when it it comes in real handy!

I wanted an Acess Cab when i went to the dealer. I got my DC instead since i got a better deal. I like the extra room, and having a back seat. This is the first truck or car that has a back seat you can use. I have had Honda Preludes and a few Tacomas in the past. I have gotten used to the size. And it fits in my garage, Barley.

Thumbs up

I am one of many on this site who have traded in their AC for a DC. My reason was strictly for expanding family reasons. My opinions....

The AC is a great truck. I loved it straight out. I put my mods into it and had fun w/ it offroad. It handled great and was super. Great in the parking lots and had just enough power for me. Obviously I wasn't buying a Tundra for the power or I would have gotten one of the big 3. But that has always been an issue I have had w/ toyota trucks.

The DC is just so much more refined. Even though they are basically the same truck inside there are little adjustments that they made. Whether it be material differences or just tightening up the fit and finish (which is great already) the DC in my opinion is much nicer. Maybe it is just the extra doors. I needed the extra space and we got it w/ the DC.
The downside to the DC is parking, offroading and power. I like the size of the truck, I just have to think twice about where and how to park. Offroading is not really something I feel the DC sreams for like my AC did. I know it will take almost any challenge it put it up against but it is just much bigger and doesn't feel as nimble as the AC. And lastly...Power, Power, Power. I feel that the truck (the AC also) needs a larger engine. That has ALWAYS been my beef w/ toyota trucks or SUVs. They are guttless in the hills or altitude (I have also owned 2 previous 4 runners). Yeah I am not racing the thing, but I would like some more power.

All in all, I would never think of owning anything other than my tundra, be it an AC of DC. I would only say get a DC if you really would use the space, I personally did. I have no regrets what so ever and love my truck.

Default d/c or access cab

personally,

I think the d/c is nothing more than a Sequoia with a pick up bed in fact when i looked at the Tundra and the Sequoia i was thinking the Sequoia would be too much of a family ride so my taste bud's at that given time were truck vs the overall utility of having a famaily hauler which i didn't need. Now since ive had my tundra a wile now i really dislike the rear door's on the access cab wile on vaction i hate the feature when parked on an incline they shut and dont have any feature to have them stay put clearly toyota didn't take the time to see any advancement's on this setup over the year's to overall improvment's ..Wile a few have traded to the d/c i really havent seen the need too because it's really not that much of a big difference and i dont justify wasting money on a truck that isnt going anywhere and going to be changed out pretty soon..I do hope toyota listen to there customers on the all new tundra due out pretty soon because if they do ill jump back and buy another one and kept it till the next redesign.Overall i am happy with buying a tundra nice v8 and the ride is smooth quiet for a truck. .

Default "Its only exciting, if someone could get hurt doing it."

i like my AC. though mines is a stepside, i can still haul 4x8 sheets of whatever, and pack a few extra people in the cab. i wish the backseat had about 5 more inches though. it would make it more comfortable for my rear passengers.

i think the V8 tundra AC, has a really good all-a-round mix of benifets. a back seat, a big bed, hauling power, and its not to oversized for a truck. the DC is a bad@ss truck, but its just too damn big for the "compact" parking stalls we have here in hawaii. it all boils down to what your needs are.

I too would like just a couple more inches of leg room in the back seat for passengers, but I love the suicide doors on the AC. No center pillar to deal with and easy to reach in and grab stuff off the back seat.

Heck - the kids will be moving out in about a year anyway, so I might as well just keep the AC.

The price difference between the ACab and DCab is insignificant. Not sure I understand this, but I think Toyota wants to sell the DCabs and the expense of the ACabs.

A lot of people who would be perfectly happy with the ACab opt for the DCab just because they're getting a bigger truck for essentially the same money.

I personally think they should leave the DCab prices as they are and reduce the prices of the ACabs.

I was totally happy with my 2000 ACab 4x4, but now I think I want a DCab because I can get it for just about the same monthly payment.
