1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Valve pinging upon hard acceleration?", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I had ping, knock, slap....whatever you want to call it...from day one. I think I have finally gotten rid of it, at least for now. Here is what I did:
Cleaned air filter (again)
Relocated ground strap from the firewall to the power steering resevoir mount
Disconnected battery, both terminals, for about an hour
I then took it on the road and repeatedly put it under heavy load to where it used to sound like it was going to fly apart (4200 rpm). At first I had a little bit of noise but it has smoothed out significantly. Ive been running midgrade gas. I had tried premium, additives, mid with no success before, but havent tried regular yet. I did this about 2 weeks ago and its still running well with no ping, knock, slap....whatever you want to call it under load. I dont know which one of the above things did it, and really don't care. I'm just happy that this problem is finally gone!

I wonder if anyone has tried a professional fuel injection cleaning to rid this problem? Since for some, this problem goes away temporarily with additives.

More than likely your fix will work long term as long as you don't use lower grade gas or have excess carbon build up in your engine. Forcing the ecu to relearn the fuel trims by driving it harder usually works well. Anytime I make a change in airflow (air filter change, exhaust mods, etc.) I disconnect the battery to clear the fuel trims. This makes the ecu learn faster than trying to get it to "break it's old habits". The more you baby your engine, the more likely the ecu will start leaning out the fuel trims, so it's advisable to push the engine a little harder to avoid relearning lean fuel trims that will cause pinging.

i like the idea of cleaning the mass air flow sensor and keeping the carbon deposits off your valves with a decent injector cleaner every third or fourth tank. mine never pings noticably. clean MAF with a couple of quick sprays of electric parts cleaner. use whatever injector cleaner you like.
I have an 04 toyota sienna and it pings terribly when driving slow, I have tried high octane gas and octane booster but notheing works. Have you had your car seen at the dealer?

My guess is that disconnecting the battery for an hour is what really did it. This would be the first thing I would do in a newer vehicle to try to eliminate pinging. Reset the learned behavior of the ECU and let it start over.
