1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra oil change interval????? (TBM-Engine & Drivetrain)", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
When I bought my 04 DC 4x4 the dealer gave me a sheet for maintenance and it said to change oil and filter every 5000 miles...I have alway gone about 3500.....any special reason for the increase?
I also tow a boat but thee dealer said to still stick with 5000.....seems a bit high for me.

Also...what brand of oil is the toyota oil?
Don't worry about the mileage buddy. 5000 is just fine by most cars/trucks today. I think the Saturn S series is one of the rare vehicles that require the 3k services. ....brand of oil ... well Toyota Genuine Oil is what they sell,...don't know what specific brand if its a knock off of anything.
5000 miles is the severe service interval in the manual, and all three Toyota dealers that I have been to don't install Genuine Toyota Motor Oil. I don't know why, probably too expensive, and no different from any other oil.

Toyota maintenance schedules have recommended 5k or 7.5K (light, noncommercial duty for distances greater than five miles in temperate
climates) oil change intervals since at least 1997

Morgan,
No telling who is packaging "Toyota" oil, nor if it changes from year to year as the contract is re-issued. It is very unlikely that "Toyota" oil is anything special. Most dealerships buy oil in bulk (tanker truck) from whoever has the oil cheapest that year.
Your truck should do fine with 5000 mile oil drain interval. If you want much better oil, buy hometown oil from Schaeffer in St. Louis. http://www.schaefferoil.com/

My '04 manual says 5000 miles and '03's and older used to say 5000-7500 depending on conditions. I asked about this at the dealership and in '04 they changed to 5000 miles.Period. Easy to see why.(Better butt coverage for them) Newer motors with tighter specs and constant improvement in motor oil requires less frequent oil changes. 3000-3500 miles is a "jiffy lube myth" IMPO. It's all about the $$
At Folsom Lake Toyota they've used Valvoline dino oil (5w-30) both times I was there.(so they say)
I don't know who manufactures "toyota motor oil."
Rich,
The Schaeffer 5W-40 is new, and should be excellent. I'm going to use it in the family VW Passat V6 and the Volvo turbo, and give it a try in the Tundra. Schaeffer's 5W-30 or 10W-30 are far better than any conventional oil, and more cost effective than any synthetic...I've had good analyses that say to continue beyond 10,000 miles with the 10W-30 in my Tundra. I did change it to 5W-30 for my winter ski trips.
Our nephew is a GM and ASE certified auto repair tech who is buying his own 5-bay shop. He does oil changes and just about all repairs, and I was talking with him this weekend. I asked him what oil change interval he recommends to his customers. He said, "3000 miles or 3 months." I said, "What a scam." He chuckled, and said, "It makes folks feel good, and they're used to that mileage." I'm buying part of the shop real estate with him, but not the business. I'll get to be my own tire buster

This is good advice if you question your change interval. My last truck was an '03 Dodge Ram with a Cummins. They changed the interval that year to 7,500 miles since they added another quart capacity (three gallons/12 quarts) and I never quite got used to an interval that long. I had the oil checked once at 7700 miles and it was plenty good for a longer period. After that, I never really worried about. The more oil in a vehicle the longer the interval can go. Tundras have a 1/2 quart or so more capacity than some other trucks.
