You would think so but earlier posts seem to indicate some are and some are not. I was just wondering if anyone knew for sure which dealer is.

New TS member here. I own a 2001 Toyota Tundra 4X4 longbed with Astro cap on bed, with 129,000 miles on it, bought it new from local dealer. I have had virtually no problems with the Tundra truck until today. While making a slow turn (about 5 mph) in a subdivision circle , the front left lower ball joint broke free, dropping that side of suspension to the pavement, separating the front four-wheel drive axle, and slightly bowing the fender outward as the wheel wheel fell on the tire. Towed the Tundra into the local dealer (I'm a VIP customer for 20 years with 5 new Toyota trucks bought under my belt, and all service done at same dealer), and haven't got the estimate yet, but expecting a large bill.

Questions for anyone:
Just two weeks ago I took the Tundra into the same dealer for front end alignment, and specifically asked that they also check for loose front end components, as the steering didn't seem right. They did the alignment and said they found no loose or worn parts. After the alignment the steering was even stiffer (it would not correct back to center after a turn) and I called the dealer service manager THIS morning before this happened to tell him of the binding steering problem. My service appointment was for tommorrow to recheck alignment. Too late for me!

Secondly, with the Toyota Motor Corporation recall on 2002-2004 Tundras for lower ball joint replacements, why were earlier models excluded? I never got a notice, only read about the recall in the paper. This is a terribly dangerous problem, if the front end collapses because of LBJ failure at highway speed, the Tundra would probably have fipped over and I could have been killed!

So my question informally here at Tundra Solutions, does either the dealer (who I am on very good terms with) or Toyota Motor Corp., have any legal or moral responsibility to pay for some or all of the damage, even though the truck is well past the warranty time/mileage limit?

Is there a number to call Toyota Motor Corp. to have then resolve or be notified of the potential (for other earlier Tundra owners) serious mechanical problem?
\
Thanks for your advice!

Try 1-800-GO-TOYOTA....it's worth a phone call, but they've been famous for sticking with the year model's involved. Don't get your hopes up....maybe ask to speak with one of the "higher ups"

If Toyota doesn't help talk with an attorney on this madder..also might want to get the National traffic safety adm On this and file a case with them http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ I think Toyota has no clue when they issue recall's because they loss profit's and bottom line when they issue recall's and Toyota really has no concern's for there customer's other then kepting you quiet..

I wouldn't let them get away with that being Toyota has been knowen to take short cut's believe me I know ..

What I would like to know is how is my 2002 Tundra not affected by this? It is smack in the middle of the campaign years and yet something was done differently with my truck that precludes it from having this problem? My VDS is BRT341, which is not listed on the campaign.

Your vehicle is listed in my copy of the SSC
Pm me your whole VIN and I will double check for you. But just from what you've given. It does apply, but I need the rest of the VIN to make sure.

DOH, you're right. I have not received a letter as of yet. Are there still some who haven't received a letter. If the letters were going in order of production, I would think I would have been covered by now. I did receive a letter in regards to the oxygen sensors so they do know how to find me.

Yes there is a recall, it is one of the ball joints. If you go to the dealer ship they can replace it in under 2hrs. It does not cost a thing. The ball joint on some vehicles got scratched during assy. There has been no known incendence with this problem they are just doing it just in case.

Just had my ball joint recall done. The steering seems even lighter (easier) than before. Is this normal?

from what i've read here it is better to just go to the dealership and get the ball joints replaced instead of waiting for a recall notice which i have yet to receive.

i already checked my VIN against the notice and it is one of the recalled ones
