Hello Everyone,
Can anyone tell me if these defective ball joints have an adverse effect on tire wear and is the the front end realigned after the new installation of the ball joints?
Thanks,
Rice Burner
Yeah, mine didn't have any tire wear problems beforehand, then the left LBJ all of a sudden broke free, falling with a bang to the pavement. No warning except for tightness/binding in the steering a few days ahead of the LBJ failure!
Realignment done after ball joint replacement, all paid for by Toyota Motor Corp.

Hi,
I have an appointment to have the lower ball joints replaced at the dealership tomorrow,(1/2/06) on my 2002 Limited 4x4. Does anyone have any info. that I should keep in mind when I go?
What can I expect from the recall? Replacement of the two lower joints, allignment, etc. Is there any compensation for premature tire wear?
About 130,000 miles , see my previous post on the previous page of this Safety Recall forum.
Poor guy on another topic had his new 2005 Tundra front CV joint break and he slid into a tree. i have to get the right Toyota corporate phone number to him to get that resolved!

They will either:
Replace the right and left front suspension lower
ball joint assembly and check the toe-in
or
Replace the right and left front suspension lower
ball joint assembly and check & adjust the front
wheel alignment
Hi Enlightened and NH Parrot,
I had the lower ball joints replaced by the dealer today,(1/2/06), I forgot to ask about the front end alignment but I will call them tomorrow to find out if it was done. It was stated that it would be done in the recall letter.
While I was there I had them check for exhaust manifold leaks and fot a very slight brake pulsation in the pedal and steering wheel sometimes.
They found no leaks on the manifolds, but said that if one occurs, it would be covered under the 8Yrs./80K emissions warranty. So I will keep that in mind.
As far as the brake pulsation, they said it was very slight and the front pads are like new. I was told by the service mgr. that I was over the time limit on the warranty. My truck is a 2002 Limited with 14,800 miles on it that was purchased 2/1/02.
Enlightened, I did see the problem that the 2005 Tundra owner had with the broken cv joint. When you find the PHONE NUMBER you mentioned that you are going to give him. Could you pass it on to me? I feel really bad for this individual and I would be screaming to Toyota if I were him. This is not right and like they say, "The Squeeky Wheel Gets The Grease".
I got mine done yesterday truck was starting to exhibit a weird vibration with BJ's done its much tighter and no vibes. I also had a check engine light come on and two 02 sensors died at 22,000 miles.
I enjoy going to my local service department about the same as a dentist. We have perhaps the worst service department in the history of Toyota locally. But to my surprise all was fixed, albeit, a few hours later than orginally told.
anyway, I'd say absolutely have it done..... plan on a full day off for your truck its a 3hr job. Unless you have a decent service dept it might be a half day excursion.
This is a long thread. I'm sure someone else asked this already.
But, any recalls on the 06 model?
Tom

I called Maita Toyota in Sacramento last Wednesday. They checked my VIN and confirmed that my truck was in the recall. I scheduled an appointment for the next day and dropped my truck off at 10:00am. I picked it up at 5:00pm. They did the suspension work and aligned all four wheels. No problems and the steering seems smoother after the work. I have been very happy with the service I have received from Maita.

Hi Rick,
I have an appointment on Tuesday at Maita. Doesn't sound like they gave you a hard time about your mods. I'm excited to get this resolved. Who do you work with over there?

Hello Everyone,
Had the ball joints replaced on 1/2/06. Took about three hours. The dealer said they checked the "Toe" but did not do a complete front end alignment. Is this normal for this recall?
My 2002 had 15K at the time of this service. I am going to replace the OEM Rugged Trail Tires with Michelin LTX M/S's. Should I get a complete front end alignment or will the dealers "Toe" check be good enough?
Thanks,
Rice Burner
my suggestions is that any time you invest good money into new tires that you should always get a front end alignment. Tires Plus gives you lifetime alignments for like 89 dollars. Not very expensive. I'd have them do the alignment as soon as the put the new tires on. That's just what I'd do.
Tom

Had my lbj's replaced today at Herb Chambers in Auburn. What great experience. Free wireless internet in the waiting area. Great service. Very professional. Fast. 1.5 hours start to finish with an alignment. Truck feels tigher, but it is probably me.
I will say that they did try to do some suggestive sell to me. They wanted to do a fuel systems service for $129. Not even sure what that is. And they wanted to do the timing belt for $389, but I only have 77,000 miles on my 2002. I will wait for at least 90,000. Told them no on both. I just bought the truck last week for 15K. My wife will shoot me if I spend anymore.
I see several posts from members talking about numerous recalls they've had! I discussed recalls with my Dealer and they reminded me that Toyota has never been forced to conduct a recall, they have been voluntary Campaigns and not Government mandated! This is another reason I purchase Toyotas and not from the big domestics. The big domestic companies tend to not to do anything unless forced too! I'm not taking away from the safety aspect of this discussion but feel it's only fair to remind others that Toyota's reputation plays a huge part in the companies success. My neighbor had problems several years ago with a GM product and GM would not help with the headgasket because it was out of warranty. I know a guy who just had a new shortblock put in his Toyota because they had a problem with the Headgaskets. I was impressed, as he has over 200,000 miles and is well out of warranty!
Hello all, I just had my '03 serviced Jan 06 and they replaced the upper ball. It was real easy, they just told me they were going to do it, due to a recall. Front end appears to be a slight bit higher after repair. I still get a bit of "dieseling" noise when accelerate hard. Dealer says its bad gas I think is MAS....we'll try the 3 tanks of super,as suggested, then see what we have.
