Here's a couple pictures of the RF failure last year at about 190,000 miles. I do not have a picture of the LF failure as it was at night and raining and I did not have my camera with me. You can see it ripped everything out including the ABS sensor, brakelines, and even pulled the front drive axle outr of the differential(?). Quite the mess.

Looks like it sheared the thru bolt on the ball joint (the piece that goes through the upper control arm)
That's a shame. Once again, I am glad it happened at low speed and that no one was hurt.
That is terrible, what's even more terrible is that you paid almost $4K to fix it not to mention it's how you make a living. I'd say it's time to talk to one of those sleazy guys that sues people...

That's pretty rough! How fast were you going when all of this came apart? Imagine running about 80 MPH down the interstate between a couple of big rigs and having this happen !
Gonna take a wild guess and say that they won't be taking mine in on the recall ! Of course, they should at least give me the equivalent cash value for all of the pain and suffering that I experienced prior to cutting the ifs off .

You can see the skid marks as I dragged the tire away from the traffic light behind me. I wasn't going fast fortunately. It broke as soon as I pulled away from the light.

My real worry is having some dealer monkey under my truck doing the work. They are going to be slamming through those repairs that Toyota will probably pay them $50 each to do as fast as they can!!!
Not very happy about this but it beats snapping a wheel off!
My buddy has an 02 Taco and he has been having some issues w/ his steering. Brought it into the dealer last week and they replaced the entire rack (he had an xtended warranty), but that only helped some of the probs. Brought it over and I thought it was a lower BJ problem (drift, sloppiness and creaking) so he brought it back to the dealer this last monday. They blamed his problems on his camburg UCA!!! It will be funny to see how this pans out......

I just spoke with my service advisor about the recall today. He said that they don't even have a plan of action to correct this problem yet. They should have something in a month. I guess that’s why the letters are not supposed to be mailed for awhile. Also it appears that you need to have the letter to get the recall service performed. I am not sure if that is the case but that is how it was explained to me. I hope this whole thing does not affect the resale of my truck!

Talked to the service mananager at the dealership this afternoon and they said nothing was official yet and they have no info other than what was "leaked" to the press. He said I should wait for the letter in July and deal with it through Toyota corporate not through the dealership. He said there will probably be a way to get re-imbursed via the recall for folks like me that have already replaced the balljoints. So I will wait. For now.
I called Toyota corporate today(1-800-331-4331) to ask them to run my Vin#.
They did, and said I'm OK and my truck is not affected.
Built in May of '04 and my last few vin#'s are 4S451---(it's almost an '05)
Called the dealer for kix and they said the same. I'm OK.......
......then the dealer called back and said I was misinformed (from the dealer)
and their computer won't be updated until mid june. Call back in a few weeks. Hmmmmmm......
Sooooo I called Toy. Corp. back with info on what the dealer just said, and they said indeed, I'm OK.
The SAGA continues.....(I'll be checkin' my mail a little closer)
I'll just quit hangin' wheelies, for now

This release from Toyota details which vehicles are affected and how they plan on reimbursing those who have already had to pay for repairs. Guess I'll be one of the unlucky ones trying to get mine fixed this summer

The same thing happend to me & friend of mine about 10 yrs ago in his mid to late 80's tacoma. We slowed down to turn into a gas station and boom. The RF tire came completly off rolling down a 25 mile hill. I'll never forget it, we sat in complete silence for a good minute watching that tire roll and bounce for what seemed forever. "If" we had been going 30mph or more we would have had an accident, but he was a good driver and was going very slow! I have two of the recalled vehicles in my driveway, and I remember that day very well b/c we both felt very fortunate. I sure hope toyota knows what the heck they are doing

Thanks for the information. I will be checking my mail for the letter. I will insist that they cover the total cost of my repairs and not just the lower balljoint replacement. I also had to rent a vehicle for 4 days for my business use. You guys are a lifesaver with all this great info. Keep it comin'! BTW my total costs for the repairs was $4800 plus rental costs and I did not have them fix the fender damage that resulted from the wheel beeing jammed up into the wheel well. Yipes!

I was about to say, glad I have those uniball uppers! Im still glad I do, although thats the stupidest thing I've heard in a while. The service manager and I would be getting into it, thats for sure...
For a second there, I thought my truck was perfect from the factory.
No truck is perfect wile there at it might as well recall the rest of the pos tundra lineup having braking issues too....I think My next truck is going to be a Nissan tired of Toyota's bad attitude from there service deptment's and bad luck in finding honest dealership's this really affects the outcome if I get a new truck from Toyota or not and if there worth my time..My coworker today was telling me about this recall and I was like Naw Not on my truck guess ill slow down on speeding on curves from now on
