"The recall covers Tacomas from the 2001 through 2004 model years, the 2001 and 2002 versions of the Four-Runner and the 2002 through 2004 model years of the Tundra and Sequoia. "

Toyota Motor Corp., in one of its largest safety recalls ever, said Tuesday it is recalling more than 750,000 pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles because of problems with the front suspension that could hinder steering. The company said the recall covers 774,856 vehicles in the United States, including the 2001-2004 model years of the Tacoma, the 2001-2002 versions of the 4Runner and the 2002-2004 model years of the Tundra and Sequoia. Toyota said the surface of a ball joint which connects to the front suspension may have been scratched when it was manufactured, which could lead to wear and tear over time. Any excessive wear or looseness in the joint could force drivers to exert more effort when steering, allow the vehicle to drift and increase the amount of noise from the suspension.
Ming-Jou Chen, a Toyota spokeswoman, said the company had confirmed six cases in which the condition existed in the suspension. There have been no injuries associated with the problems. Toyota said it planned to conduct a similar recall of the affected vehicles in Canada, Japan, Australia and other countries, but did not immediately have the number of vehicles that would be covered outside the U.S. Chen said it was one of the largest recalls in company history. In 1992, Toyota recalled about 550,000 Camrys from the 1987-1990 model years because of the potential for power door locks to malfunction and lock passengers out of or inside the vehicles. In 2002, the company recalled nearly 400,000 subcompact and minicar vehicles exported to the United States, Europe and Canada because of improperly designed brake fluid pipes. In Tuesday's recall of trucks and SUVs, owners will be notified beginning in July and will be able to have the problem fixed at no cost, Chen said.

Do we know if it's the upper or lower ball joints? And will they replace them in pairs or just look to see if there is a problem and replace what is found to be bad?
Here is an interesting article,

Yes this is exactly what I have. Summer 2004, I brought it to a local Toyota dealer said I experienced these exact symptoms, to check the ball joints and the steering components, and after being at the dealer all day, they claimed there was nothing wrong with it and sent me on my way. I guess they didn't bother to look or didn't want to do the work.
I bought the Total Chaos Steering Bushings and I haven't put them in yet. I hope my recall notice gets here soon.

Toyota didn't waste anytime jumping to Recall status (which the other domestics, sadly, seem to drag their feet). I guess because of the potential involved down the road of steering issues they popped the alarm.
I still can't help but think they might have over-reacted since only 6 people thus far out of how many have actually had an issue. Should we park our affected Toyotas just in case? I'm betting scheduling and parts availability might be an issue though with this many vehicles involved. I guess they could stagger the notifications but now that it's mainstream news I'm betting dealers are going to get tired of calls about it.
Seems like July and the rest of the year thereafter is going to be busy for the dealers managing 3/4 of a million vehicles.

Looks like you'll be able to tell your dealer "I TOLD YOU SO, DORKS!"

Hehe. Just as I predicted. 1,000 calls per day to any particular Toyota dealer to clarify all the "what if's"...
Maybe Toyota should have waited a few weeks to allow for their notification system to kick-in a little.
Yes I guess they go by the saying "The Customer is never right". I probably won't get the chance to call them dorks because I won't be going back to them for this. I really don't want them touching my Tundra ever again. They've made me a non-returning customer. By the way, this dealer in question in NOT the dealer I bought the Tundra from.
