1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled ""8 years later" 2000 Tundra owners post here", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I love my Tundra. Just turned over 34,000 miles and still looks brand
new and runs even better.
I made a few modifications to it and now I have a 400 hp sport truck
that is a hoot to drive.
I have everything I need in this truck. It's a personal size pickup that
does everything well and coddles the occupants in the process - and it's
paid for!

For normal wear and tear:
4th set of tires
second set of pads and shoes
2 license plate light bulbs(twice on left side)
outside cab courtesy light bulb(left side)
Timing belt along with water pump
pvc valve
serpentine belt
3rd set of headlight bulbs
Hey wait a minute, those looks like just routine maintenance. I guess I can call that flawless then.

My buddy had a 2000 tundra access cab 4x4 with the 3.4 v6, and it had about 300,000 Kms on it (180,000 miles) when he sold it. The guy who bought it towed a horse trailer with a horse in it and and the truck full of stuff from Nova Scotia to the Yukon and back (without the horse).
Original tranny, and for some reason he never had any brake problems with this truck. It was one of the first ones made!
Bought mine in March 2000 with 5 miles on the odo. Had the brake tsb, and replaced the front diff actuator. Other than that, rountine maintenance. Still runs and looks like a new one. At this rate' I'll have it for 10 years before it has 100k on it and will be just getting broken in good! Best truck I've owned except for my 89 Mazda which was bullet proof.
Bought June 2000, 111,000 miles, 3rd set of tires, at 110,000 miles installed JBA headers and exhaust feels like a new truck with the extra horsepower, couldn't take the cracked exhaust manifold anymore. Replaced front brake pads at 70,000 miles, replaced dash lites at 90,000 when the timing belt was replaced. Average overall gas milage between 15 and 18 miles per gallon. Looks nearly new, keeping till 2010 at least. Love this truck, almost perfect size to do everything a homeowner needs to do with a truck.
Bought mine 1/7/01... 115k on it now. In the midst of replacing the O2 sensor (passgr side front). I only use it occasionally these days, but for 5 yrs it was my daily driver.
3rd set of tires
D drive lamp in dash
right rear drive shaft seal (and it's leaking now on the left side.)
2nd set of front disc brakes
timing belt/water pump/serpentine
94k on mine, I just cant seem to get either a good alignment, or a good balancing on my tires, I get some what of a vibration. Also, I think I am starting to get transmission problem, a hard shift going to 2nd at high rpms. other than that, my brakes are fixed and everything else is going great!
Well I havent owned mine for 5 years but, I have noticed that the alignment isnt right. It was perfectly fine when I bough it, but starting to shake at 60mph. Also with the tranny issue it shifts hard into 2nd when I am hard on the pedal or in rolling traffic.

Hi Guys! Have a 2000 tundra w/ towing package, just wondering how many lbs. it will tow safely. I get alot of different figures from different sources but i'd like to hear from people who have actually towed, like how much and how far. By the way, V-8 automatic 4X4.

Shaking wheels is usually tires out of balance or belt separation. make sure you haven't thrown a weight. Also I notice my tundras wheels aren't the strongest, I have two slightly bent wheels so I keep them on the rear and keep an eye on them. Sooner or later I'll get them reconditioned.

Both my exhaust manifolds cracked at the front flange on my 2000 ,I took them off and welded them. I've had no problems since. You have to be a good welder, if your not have a pro mig them for you.
54,000 miles done the hard way; bouncing across the desert, up and down mountains with an 8' camper on top until recently, now it pulls a 26' 5'er that I named "Solar City" for obvious reasons if you see it in person. Toyota replaced the front brake system when it had 15,000 miles on it and I am still running the same shoes and pads since. Did JBA headers when I got the 5'er for the extra torque, other than that it is stock.
I, like others have mentioned here, still say "damn I love that truck", it will be hard to let it go - but there is a new Tundra coming and I want to load my 5'er up more!
Mine is touchy about tire balance but I have found that some of that issue was out of round tires more so than balance, just the same it is touchy on balance.

Gross is 7,200 lbs for a 4X2 a 4X4 will be less because of the weight of that system. I could google up the specs but then you are on the net too so unless someone jumps in with specs they just google it.
97k miles later, the only problems was the O2 sensor heater went bad. Its apretty worthless part. Other than that, nothing. My truck looks great. The best vehicle i will ever have.
Just turned 130k on my 2000, same problems as everybody else: brakes (finally bought aftermarket rotors-no problems since); exhaust manifolds; alignment (DJ's specs fixed that); weird 1-2 shift under hard throttle but shifts alright otherwise; CD player replaced, r/s mirror control replaced. One tune-up (probably didn't need), timing belt/water pump maintenance at 90K, never burned a drop of oil. Still a joy to drive, just keeps going. . . . .
