1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled ""8 years later" 2000 Tundra owners post here", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
While I've only had mine since January of 2003 I have no big complaints. The paint chipping issue is disappointing but I've had no rust appear where the chips are and the loose antenna and seat belt problems were addressed before the warrantee period expired. Still have the original brake system with new pads and no problems. The previous owner did a decent job of maintaining the truck (I bought it with 28k miles, it has 60k now) and I'd do it again if the same opportunity came up.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
I had a 2000 tundra v8 4X4. Put 146,000 hard miles on. Never left me anywhere or had any significant problems. I had the brake rotors turned twice that cured the brake pulsaton problems. Engine, tranny, and rear end were all flawless. Never did burn any oil. Did a ton of towing with the rig.
Like it so much I got a 2005 doublecab. So far its also been great
97,000 miles, doing the timing belt and left exhaust manifold next month on my vacation. Thought about the JBA's but not sure how long I will be keeping it so that doesn't seem like a good investment at the time. Have not really had any other problems, still on all original brake parts except pads. Replaced tires and pads at 68,000 for the first time on both and still have good tread on the Coopers for this next winter anyway. Would buy another Tundra, not sure what is happening with the horse farm as my daughter is going to college in a year, and the rest of the family is ready to head in another direction. Then I probably wouldn't need a big truck, but I still love the Tundra and the drive to work everyday. Still stops as smooth as it did the day I brought it home, one of the lucky ones I guess.
Great idea for a post, by the way, a 5 year recap of sorts.
Happy Hauling,
Doug

Everything Under The Sun Is Eclipsed By The Moon, But The Sun Is Eclipsed By The Moon- Roger Waters
I've gone through:
3 sets of tires (including factory ones)
2 sets of aftermarket wheels (going to bead blast/clearcoat first set for winter use)
2 aftermarket exhausts (found killer deal on ebay on another so I removed the first one)
2 aftermarket headunits (second one is a touchscreen DVD/MP3 player)
1 pair of brake pads
1 pair of front rotors
Collected:
Ding on driver-side door.
Dings on bed
Dings on hood and roof (stupid tall oak trees)
Ding on cab, above bed after hauling some lighting trusses for a friend.
All sorts of dents and scratches on the bed side and top edge of the tailgate.
Assorted hairline scratches (I'm horrible when it comes to waxing and stuff)
This is sad,I still have to finish:
A/V system
Suspension (including rear air bags)
Headers
Bassani exhaust
IS aero kit (only have the grill installed)
Rear disc brake conversion
Brake controller/6-pin tow harness
HID projector retrofit in headlights
Yellow HID conversion in foglights.
HID auxiliary reverse lights
Get junkyard rear bumper painted body color
Get body color tailgate handle
Install tonneau cover
Spray-on liner
Rear swaybar
By the time I finish,I'll probably want to trade it in for a double cab

Got mine new in 6/99. 88,000 miles later I have only had a brake TSB done. No other problems and she taken me where no other Tundra has gone before with only, as Dyogim would say, "slight" modifications

Got a question 'bout TS.com? You'll probably find your answer HERE!

Five years and 145,000 miles later, whats your upside and downside of your truck? My downside happens to be my brake problems. Upside is the quiet ride and lack of rattles. I still LOVE my truck. How about you?
About 5 years for me too, just turned 130,000.
Been through:
1 transmission
13 oil changes (love Amsoil!)
4 sets of front rotors
2 sets of rear drums
About 12 sets of front brake pads
2 front differentials
2 half shafts (one was my fault!)
2 full sets of CV boots
1 set upper balljoints
1 broken antenna
1 bad catalytic converter
1 set of tie rod ends
2 rear oil seals
2 Front Driveshaft U joints
1 Rear axle bearing
1 Rear axle shaft
1 set Dunlop OEM garbage (lasted 10K miles) and three other sets of tires
1 set 16" OEM rims, bead went bad after third tire change
Numerous alignments
however
ZERO engine problems (knock on wood)
I love the fact that the motor's been real sound throughout the hard work I put my truck through. The rest of the truck is complete garbage IMO and made too small or too weak for my purposes. Weak suspension, tranny, and brakes all mated to a torquey V8 leaves me to wonder if Toyota foresaw any heavy duty usage at all when they built the Tacoma Version 1.5 (aka Tundra) Funny, I was just making fun of my buddy's F-150 for their service history and then we compared work records....my Tundra has seen more garage time than his similarly equipped F-150; even though my first F-150 was a hunk of junk.
Upgrades: PA 3" Body Lift, Powertrax No-Slip rear, Detroit ezLocker front, Fabtech/Fox front, Wheeler's AALs, TC Front Diff Drop, 16 x 8 MB Wheels, 285/75R16 Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs, Pioneer Head Unit, Infiniti Reference speakers [front and rear], 150 W bridged amp to bandpass enclosure, 6 CD changer with IR remote, iPod mini and xm hardwired into stereo, Toyota drop in bedliner, and Tonneau cover
Had this one from new and only 30,000 miles to date. Truck has been terrific. No warranty claims and no problems whatsover. Synthetic front to back. Most of the time now the truck leads an easy life but then every once in awhile it gets hooked up to our trailer and earns its keep (overdrive off). Transmission has been solid to date and I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one. Cheers, Dave
so since were into issues on the tundra hear's my list
1 . broken antenna too per toyota tsb that was issues on first year tundra's
2. at least 12 sets of brakes pad's shoes etc etc and new calpiers added from the 03 up Tundra..

T3 Grill, Line X extra front Bumper coating (too many mod's to list)
69K miles on my 2wd V8. Love the engine.
Problems so far:
17K: Brake TSB X 3. Occasional (rare) vibration while braking downhill, but I can live with it. The last TSB done at 25K with replacement of all rotors, pads, drums, etc. Took out most of the shudder/vibration. Replaced the OEM Dunlaps with Coopers which helped even more.
18K Oil pan leak.....repaired under warranty.
20K Belt squeal....warranty
25K Seat vibration TSB done.......warranty
alignment X 3. The last one hit the mark (Hunter machine) and took out the chronic pull to the left that had been there ever since I bought it.
65K Both oxygen sensors replaced.....warranty.
Getting the work done at the local toyota dealership has been the most painfull part of owning my tundra. It was a battle almost every time. They would agree that the truck had a problem and needed the work, but would deny any TSB existed. Each time I would listen to their denial for a minute, then pull the TSB out of my back pocket (Thanks to TS). Then it was "OH, that TSB). Thankfully, my dealership had it's franchise jerked by Toyota and given (sold) a couple of months ago. Maybe things will improve.
The best part of my Tundra is the power and comfort (my two main priorities)
Looking to purchase a new car for my wife, we recently spent all day driving new Camrys and Honda Accords. In the tundra, on the way home, my wife said, "You know, I wish we could find a car that rides as well as this, and is as quiet as this".
Who would of thunk it........a five year old pickup that is quieter, smoother, and more comfortable than a brand new car.
I recently got rid of my '00 tundra - my complaints were about the same as everyone else.
In about 200K non maintenance things I ran into
1 bad fan clutch, broken spider gears in rear end - both at 105K, MAF sensor @80K (due to K&N?), Lots of front brakes, 8 02 sensors (6 front and 2 rear), both exhaust manifolds at less than 40K, no transmission problems.
In all honesty - the last 100K was more reliable and troublefree than the first 100K
Overall the truck performed great, and still drove/looked like new when sold.
I always wished it had more power.
I liked it enough that I bought a new one - I still wish it had more power.

2005 G35 Sedan 6MT - Returned due to paint work on a 'new' car.
2006 G35 Sedan 6MT - all stock. Where do I hook up the trailer and where's the bass?
After reading all of the negatives and positives I thought I might toss this in...
What else besides a Tundra is out there that would perform as well for that many years. I know many people with Fords Chevy's and Dodge pickups and they are always blown away with the reliabilty of the 2 Tundras I have owned. In my opinion there is nothing out there that will give me the best return on my dollar period.
Although I did not own my 2001 Tundra for 5 years, the three I had it for were perfect. No repairs other than the Brake TSB and regular maint. My 2004 Double cab is coming up on one year and No problems yet.....
I believe My trucks will out last any other make. They may not be as powerfull and may not be able to tow as much but in the long run My Tundra will have a better resale value.
Great truck. Only 22,000. TRD supercharger, TRD single exhaust, TRD limited slip, Hellwig sway bar, S&S long tube header with the y-pipe, Snug top cover. Had all the brake upgrades from Toyota. My work takes me out of town alot so my truck is parked in my garage much of it's life. Love the truck but might sell to get a '05 Mustang or a SVT Cobra. Very difficult decision.
Dibs on the Supercharger if you sell it.
72000 miles. sweetness, bunch of mods, just check the sig. great truck likely will never see another owner.

One set of rear drums
Two sets of rear shoes
Two rear axle seals, drivers side - This is the pisser
