1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled ""8 years later" 2000 Tundra owners post here", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Well tho I am not the orginal owner, my step dad is I bought it from him in Feb. 05. It has 55k on it, he never had any problems with the brakes or any of that other stuff I have been reading about that some people have had (lucky I guess). Right after I got it I had to take it in for check engine light. Turned out to be the o2 sensor was bad, but it was stuck in the manifold they couldn't get it out (so they said). Either way it was $1,500 to replace the manifolds and what not (I didn't pay a dime of it). I have a great service writer who took care of everything from the TSB's and recalls so they paid for everything. I also had the trailer electrical replaced recently from the TSB since it never was done by my step dad. Even though it was out of the mileage range they did it free anyways and gave me a rental car too. Now I just hope I don't end up with problems with anything that does not have a TSB or recall on it. Even with these few minor problems I love this truck. I will prolly keep it till it falls apart then just buy another Tundra.

I moved to southern Utah last October and have been doing a lot of camping and riding ATV. Gotta get a 4x4. Looking at the 2005 Double cab. With the kids being older, the 2000 back seat wasn't cutting it.

I bought it over 1.5 years ago with 37,000km's on it (about 20k miles) and now just rolled to 70,000km's. I've towed a 28' airstream, car hauler with a '67 DeVille on it, numerous other trailers and building materials too along with other things as well and all I've replaced are the front pads and the oil.
Things I don't like are the black fender flairs, the metal brackets rusted off.
The dash has a squeek. The oil filter is in a bad place and I get oil all over every time. And I have a squeek in the back, the shock I think.
I am so satisfied with my Tundra and will buy another in the future...maybe a diesel
68,000 miles 2001 Limited TRD package 2x4 almost 5 years old. No problems except body work (my fault). Only thing that i have problems with is really bad tire/brake vibration and i have a really bad exahust leak somewhere. But other than that, no engine problems or anything, never been in the shop for nothing more than lift setup and body work. I LOVE MY TRUCK it never let me down it always took care of me so i take care of it. Which reminds me iam going to go wash it just got the oil changed and manifold/piston head cleaning. Runs a whole lot better and i see the better gas miliage. BEST TRUCK EVER MADE.
Just bought mine, needless to say I am happy with it. 77k Miles. Brakes shake, but I knew about that issue going in. I'll probably upgrade to drilled rotors at the next brake job. Adding nerf bars, billet grill, maybe more, but I'm not an off-roader so I'll stick to the basics at this point.
Hey to all, saw this thread a week or two ago and just read through. Now it's after the 4th of July and my first real issue. the dreaded O2 sensor, I checked Tundra Solutions as soon as I got access to a computor, (I was in Sault Ste. Marie MI) technology can be scarce up there. Ran to the local Advance auto and borrowed their scanner and came up P0135, front left bank, #1 sensor. As there are no Toyota dealers in the UP, closest one is about 80 miles away, I drove it home. Also of note after again reading our great site for info I called Toyota Corp to asked if I could get my sensor fixed at "another" dealer under warrenty? foolish me, "Sure you can"...but you'll need to send us a copy of the work order, sales receipt and a statement from the tech who did the work on why the part failed, how they repaired it etc.....I don't think so, so then I asked, can I just repair it myself and be reimbursed for the O2 sensor? ($148 at Advanced Auto) Nope can't do that, they said....so as I said drove it home some 800 plus miles. Took it to my local Toyota dealer and to my suprise they are replacing BOTH sensors so that the check engine light won't come on. (for once I'm impressed). But it was short lived then they tell me, hey your drive belt is old and cracked, we have it here why not let us replace it for $176, I don't think so!!! go over to Auto Zone, belt: $27, savings $150!!
Last but not least to all who read this tell your friends about Tundra Solutions, this site if nothing else, does save you money on maintenance, it's just that you all keep talking about all the neat stuff you have on your trucks that causes the rest of us to spend money....
I have a 2002 that I have had for about three years now (same style as the 2000). I like it more now than I did initially. It is way more fun to drive, and has a much more "solid" feel compared to the 3 GM trucks I have had before the Tundra. I have not had a single problem with mine. I have replaced the original tires and wiper blades, along with scheduled maintanence. I will likely be driving this vehicle for a long time. I still look forward to driving it each day!
63k on mine, original brakes (did replace star adjuster around 20k which fixed my brake problem) and I tow in the winter, replaced one side manifold, just had engine light come on which told to replace two oxygen sensors...under emissions warranty . The only thing I don't like, from the beginning, is the paint. I still love this truck!
I've had my 2000 SR5 4X4 since July 4, 2000, currently has 100k on it. Had the usual front brake problems, (3 brake jobs while under warranty, one on my own, needs another), both exhaust manifolds replaced, CD player change out and one power mirror problem. I'm finishing up my 2nd set of tires (Dayton Timberline ATs), will probably go with the same again. I finally found a shop here in Ft. Worth that could align it correctly, using specs I got from the T.S. website. I liked this shop so much I let them do the timing belt/water pump change-out ($700 and worth it). I also did the back seat angle fix and the throttle cable slack adjustment, again using info from T.S. website. I get compliments on the truck ALL THE TIME, no one can believe it's a 2000 model even though I haven't been afraid to tow, haul, or go wherever I wanted to go in it. My wife is driving an '03 Highlander (after 2 Camrys) so I guess we'll be a Toyota family for awhile.
65,000 miles and five years later, Im on my second set of tires, Michelin cross terrains. They have worn very slowly, good tires. I had the front brake recall done, and no problems since. Had a low fuel sensor replaced last week. Otherwise, trouble free. A couple of rattles coming from the back of the cab somewhere, but very minor. Wanted to put a tow hitch on it. Is the toyota wiring plug in on the Tundra? Or will I have to splice the wiring in.
94k on mine, I just cant seem to get either a good alignment, or a good balancing on my tires, I get some what of a vibration. Also, I think I am starting to get transmission problem, a hard shift going to 2nd at high rpms. other than that, my brakes are fixed and everything else is going great!
I noticed the same shift issue between 1st and 2nd, especially on hard excellerations. Had the transmission replaced; 59,700+ miles. Yikes!!!

There are plug in kits. I got mine on ebay for around $25 if I recall correctly. It was really easy to install.

Bought mine new Feb. 2000, had three miles on the ODO. It was my first
truck and my first Toyota - no regrets on either account.
Had the standard first year problems with the dipstick, brakes, and towing
package electricals, all resolved under warranty with one visit to the dealer.
Other than scheduled maintenance, this was the only time my Tundra was in for service. I was lucky enough to have a great dealer that took good care of my Tundra and treated me like a valued customer.
Made some modifications mostly to make for a better tow vehicle which
inluded TRD headers and dual outlet exhaust, TRD red bilsteins, rear
swaybar, four wheel disc brakes and Michelin Pilot LTX tires. I have
always used Mobil one and change it every 3000 miles. I also replaced
the fluid in the tranny and differential with synthetic.
I learned early on about the eccentricities of Japanese paint and aquired
the proper gear to take care of it. As a result, my Tundra looks better
now than the day I bought it.
Overall, I have been extremely pleased with my Tundra and wouldn't
hesitate to buy another one if the need arises.
