    Default Limited Slip Question

Hi, I'm a noob to this forum. Searched the site for an answer to my question - no luck. So here's my first post:
I have a 2000 Tundra SR5 4x4 Access Cab with 110K miles on it. I live in snowy Mt Shasta at the southern end of the Cascades, in CA. We get some pretty good snow...
Every year I get stuck once or twice trying to blast through wet snow. I have the weight in the back of the truck (200# of sand). What I don't have is the TRD package, most notably I don't have a limited slip differential.
My question is: would it be worth it to get a limited slip diff installed? Should I go to the dealer for this, or find someone else? How much should I expect to pay for this mod, which is now standard on all Tundras?
Trying to decide whether to mod my current, paid-off Tundra, or upgrade to an '05 or '06.
    Any comments appreciated!

Yes, that and a set of dedicated snow/traction tires should do the trick.

Look for the KAZUMA/TRD/EATON LSD for about $300.
Installation: Get some local information and suggestions.

I had my dealer install mine ($650) when I first purchased my '02 with 18,000
miles on it - everything is covered under my certified pre-owned warranty.

I ended up with a set of Michelin Traction tires on a spare set of steel rims.
We don't get that much snow here in Georgia but we do get ice.
During our last ice event I was able to go anywere I wanted with this set-up

    Hey Man,
I know that my 2005 SR5 Access Cab with TRD Offroad package did NOT come with the LSD. That's something that you have to look for seperately.

If it were me, I'd say have it added, although it is a good reason to buy a new truck...

Expect to pay about $400 for the LSD(limited slip diff. - for those thinking another meaning of the acronym ). You'll also want to get a master install kit($150), outer seals and o-rings($25). The master install kit should have new carrier and pinion bearings. I'd also suggest getting the outer bearings replaced while you are at it. At 110K miles it's cheap preventive maintenance.

Not sure how much the dealer will charge for labor, I'd guess about $500 to have all above installed.

Check with a good nearby differential specialty shop or 4wd shop. There should be one or more in Redding or Ashland, or wherever you go for major items. Worth it? If you have good snow tires and are still slipping, yes. I consider good snow tires to be as narrow as possible, lots of siping, and with the special rubber compounds that stay soft in the cold. 245/75-16 Bridgestone Winter Dueler, Toyo Observe, or Cooper Discoverer M&S are examples.

I think the TRD Eaton Kazuma LSD is out of production. You might contact some of the dealerships that advertise on TS to see if they are still available. Or contact Randy's Ring & Pinion about an LSD. You'll be able to get bearings, shims, etc., cheaper and faster from Randy's than from a dealership, and they are OEM Toyota parts.

In Canada, all 4x4 Tundras have limited slip diff as standard equpiment since 2003 i think. It will help in certain situations but you may not notice any difference at all if you are driving on a surface with equal traction at all four corners. In off road conditions where you can get your truck on slopes etc, it is very helpfull.

I'm sorry but (200# of sand) thats ghetto for todays standards. This is what I use www.shurtrax.com. You fill it up will water and it a couple of hundred pounds right on your rear axel where it belongs. . The shurtrax also doesen't slide around on you or go anywhere. When you are done you simply drain out the water and roll it up and store it for the next time.

Ok, back to the real question. I would go and buy the limited slip and a 2nd set of tires like some good mud T/A. That way you can swap tires depending on what you are doing. Asphalt will eat you mud T/A alot faster.

    True, true.

Thanks for the quick responses. Forgot to mention that I'm running BFGoodrich AT's for rubber.
I called Gear Connection in Redding, they said about $850 for an Eaton LSD, installed.
    Guess I'll jump.
Need to replace tires. Any recommendations? I was pretty happy with the BFG's, got two years outta them (I'm on asphalt 90%, but I really need the AT's to get through the long winter).
Also, I need shocks - still running the stock shocks. Any recs? I'm NOT hardcore... just want a smooth ride.

Jeez, I'm really milking this noob thing, what?

Wow what is this 20 questions. Just kidding . I have friends that crave on the BFGs also (currently running the mud T/A very quiet for an aggressive tread. I currently have the Goodyear Wrangler ATS which my dad has had it the past and has loved them. As far as the shocks I like my stock Bilstein 5100s that come on the Tundra TRD's.

P.S. I take back that ghetto cheap shot, I just been a big fan of shurtrax since I bought it.

Hey gussie, contact member ricqik. He's selling a brand new never installed Powertrax, no-slip for, I think, $300. It's pretty easy to install yourself. Or contact Mike Donofrio. He's had good experience with Sean at River City Differentials in Sacramento.

I have 4WD with the Limited Slip. It goes right through snow.

I was plowed in infront of my house last winter and while everyone else was trying to shovel their vehicles out, I cleared the snow from my door, got in, warmed it up, pushed the 4wd and drove away. I left the big pile there and didn't bother to shovel it because I know I would be the only one to park on that big heap of snow when I got back home from work.

So, if you drive in snow, Limited Slip is a plus.

Hey, how does the LSD work in wet rainy conditions? The worst I get where I am is heavy rain and rarely snow. I also rarely go off-road. Would an anti-sway bar improve the effectiveness of the LSD at all?
My ePinions Review on the 2003 Tundra:
    http://www.epinions.com/content_136168771204

MY TUNDRA: Desert Sand Mica, 2003 SR5 Toyota Tundra Access Cab, with (debadged) TRD Off-Road Package.

    CURRENT ADD-ONS, BOLT-ONS, SLAP-INS & MODIFICATIONS:

EXTERNAL: Toyota of Dallas Sports Grille, Performance Products bed mat, PIAA silicon wiper blades, Sylvania Silverstar headlight bulbs, Bully stainless steel nerf bars, debadged of all labels & insignias externally, Stant 10509 locking gas cap/cover, bullet style valve stem covers, OEM Tow Package (130A alternator, transmission cooler, etc.), 2" blind spot mirrors (Wal-Mart parking lot aids), 12" stubbie antenna, color-keyed door edge trim, clear front corners.
INTERNAL: OEM dash cover, super white/blue xenon interior lights (look awesome at night), Wheelskins sand colored steering wheel cover, OBX sports pedals, map light mod, Tundra labeled door sill protectors.

And, a lot more to come!

All I have to do now is invest in the Redneck Retirement System*, then I can finish with all the modifications I want on my truck.

an anti-sway bar simply keeps your truck more flat during cornering -- improving safety and handeling.
