1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Magnaflow Cat-Back single or dual?", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have just spent literally over 4 hours going thru the site reading about aftermarket mufflers and exhaust systems.
I have also been searching online manufactures sites as well.
I want to change the sound of my Tundra.
I want to hear my V8.
I don't want anything too loud, just a boost from what the stock muffler gives me.
I don't want the neighbors hating me when I come home from work at 3 in the morning.
I don't want to lose any low end torque either.
I don't tow anything or even haul much in the bed.
I think have decided to purchase the Mangaflow Cat-Back Performance System.
My question is should I get the 15809 single in/single out or the 15820 single in/dual out on the same side?
From what I have read today, most of you will recommend to me to get the single in/out.
I like the look of the dual out, but don't know which one will sound the best as well as perform the best.
That is the reason for the post.
The single would be about a $150 cheaper which would be nice.
The Mangaflow sound clips from their website and the clips posted by GameMaster011
from his Tundra sound perfect.
The flowmaster and borla sound clips that I have heard seem to be loud for me.
I had glasspacks on my 81 chevy 20 years ago. Those days are long gone.
Any input would be appreciated, even to recommend a better setup.

I agree to go with the magnaflow, but save yourself a lot of money and only purchase the muffler only. Forget about the whole cat back system. Keep the stock piping and have the new muffler welded on...Others like myself have done this with magnaflow and other brands and have had great results not too mention the extra money in our pocket when all is said and done. Also, if I am not mistaken if you go to a duals, you will loose low end torque.. Just my opinion
everything I read says STAY AWAY from magnaflow. here's some reviews at magnaflow's own site:

then you have the idiots that think they can feel a few hp (and then guestimate the #, no less) with their butt-dyno:

I don't know... I've just heard a LOT of bad things about magnaflow... And thus-far, all the trucks I've heard with magnaflow exhaust have sounded quite ricey. There's a lot of talk about buying a catback and switching muffers again.
I currently have the Magnaflow muffler with headers and an aftermarket "Y" pipe and I "feel" like I've lost low and mid range power (no dyno results to back that up). I originally had the Flowmaster cat-back system which I loved and I let my wife talk me into taking it off because she thought it was too loud. Next weekend, I am putting my second Flowmaster back on since 90% of the time I am the only one in the truck anyway. I will have a slightly used Magnaflow for sale after next weekend if you are interested.

i have had magnaflow single in/dual out on my truck for about 3 years now and it was the best thing that i have done to my truck. i too do not do a lot of towing, and minimal hauling in the bed. most of my driving is freeway (85%). i have been told by several people, from other tundra owners to dodge ram owners and even ford owners, that my exhaust sounds GREAT!! i'm also like you, i don't like the drone or noise from flowmaster or any other exhausts. magnaflow has one of the best sounding exhausts for our trucks. on the other hand, if performance is what you want (4-6 more hp), i would suggest going with a high dollar, more noisy, more drone competitor. i'm just speaking from my own experience....i'm sure other people disagree with me, but hey....i know i'm right

I just purchased exhaust for my 2005 AC Limited. I did tons of research trying to find the best for my needs. I wanted something that wasnt to loud but sounded beefy when driving. I had a flowmaster on my 2002 and it sounded good at idle but the 2k drone was killing me. I had to turn the radio up loud just the hear the music. Also the flowmaster was a little high pitched for my taste. I went to Claremont toyota last weekend and heard the banks exhuast installed on a 2005 DC. It sounded really good so I purchased it.
After driving for about a week with it here is my feedback. At idle the sound is very low(I can barely hear the exhaust). When driving and you get on it.....MAN what a great sound this exhuast has. The 2k drone is about 20% of the flowmaster which makes me very happy. AS to low end loss.....I can feel a little but not enough to make me want to lose the great sound I have. If you want to go with Banks contact Matt at claremont Toyota and I am sure they will take very good care of you as they did for me. Hope this helps.

Mostly the one that said people thought the Magnaflow wasn't loud enough.
If it isn't loud enough for some, then it should be exactly what I am looking for.
I just want a slight boost from the stock muffler.
I know I didn't give the thread much time but I am ready to order, well I did order today.
I went to a couple muffler shops today. One guy first looked at my truck and asked me what kind of truck it was. They wanted $75 to switch out just the muffler. One shop wanted $125 to install the cat back, which I can easily do myself.
I also called HottExhaust.com and asked them a few questions.
They are a Magnaflow online dealer, I think that is all they sell, Magnaflow products.
They were more than helpful to answer all my stupid questions and gave me a 15% discount for being a TS member.
They also have free shipping.
I decided to go ahead and get the single out cat back system, as opposed to the muffler only, for the following reasons.
1. I can put it on myself.
Everything I have done or bought for my Tundra I did or installed myself. Except make the sub box.
Who will do a better job on my truck than myself? NOBODY.
2. It bolts on instead of welding.
If for any reason I want to take it off, don't like it or whatever, I can take it off, and put the stock stuff back on.
Then I can sell it on ebay, although I don't think that will happen.
3. All stainless steel mandrel-bent tubing and muffler.
Three inch tubing out the back, just a touch bigger than stock.
Hopefully I won't lose any performance. Some say I will, others say I won't.
I plan on keeping this truck till it stops running.
I don't mind spending a little more on stainless steel.
4. Comes with the Magnaflow 3.5" slash/p-SS tip.
I know I could just add a tip to the stock pipe. This one is already welded on and ready to go.
Reason I bought Magnaflow, not as loud as Flowmaster or Borla, also the lifetime warranty.
I realize this is put out by Magnaflow and they just want to sell mufflers, but there it is anyway.
It doesn't really mean much to me. My main objective is better sound as opposed to racing around town. If I wanted something faster, I wouldn't be driving a pickup.
Thanks for your help guys, if anyone wants to continue this thread please feel free. Perhaps it could help someone else.
I should get this thing by Friday and install it this weekend.
I'll try to get some kind of video or sound clips in my photo gallery soon.
If by chance I put this on and it sucks, power loss/ bad sound, I won't hesitate to say "you guys were right", but hopefully it won't come to that.

I have a banks cat back exhaust system and love it. All stainless steel, nice low purrrrr ,single tip. check the banks power site. They have one specifically for the 2005 tundra.
Yea I had a magnaflow on my 95 t100 (stainless) Single outlet. I loved it. When I got my dream tundra about a month ago. within 2 weeks I had many things I had but in and one was a magnaflow dual muffler. I had my custom exhaust shop order it and but it on for me(ex how I wanted it) out on 45's with stainless tips....love the sound. I also have had dodge, ford and chevy ownes tell me how good my TOYOTA sounds. I am "that guy" that had always had a toyota truck and will now start to prove its performance +'s. I do live on a hog farm ( no now, back at school, but in summers) and we do do a lot of towing....believe me I do not have the typical truck where I live. I'm that Guy, and I love it.
peace
BTw....in the progress of putting all my interior acess. in. I will post pics when done....hard to get done up here away from my tools and shop. includes....dvd player, another back up camera, viper 791 xv with remote start...and some add ons to increase the chances of a sucessful break in.....

so, lowlife, how does it run? Any low-end power loss? Any power gain? Is there any 2K drone? I'm curious to hear how it is as I have an '05 and eventually want to do my exhaust, but don't want to do anything until I'm sure how it's going to work. So far, the advice I have says to leave it alone. The truck already gets bad enough milage and doesn't have that much low-end power to begin with (although when you floor it, it really moves) and I don't want to make those worse (the milage and low-end). I also don't want anything really loud, but right now, it doesn't sound like a V-8 and I want a little bit of rumble without excessive volume
Who has the TRD dual exhaust system and how do you like it?
I have had the TRD for over 50k miles now. I really like the sound. It is pretty quiet on the freeway. Around town you can hear it though. You definitely hear it when you get on it though. Overall it is a medium loudness exhaust system. Some people think it is pretty quiet though. I think the JBA system is quieter.
Exhaust is really a personal preference. I love the sound of the TRD but I do wish it were louder at times. If you want louder and like the sound of the TRD, check out Bassani. In my photo gallery I have a few videos of my exhaust. It gives you a pretty good idea what they sound like.
