1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "What trans fluid to use? 2000 AT", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have a 2000 4.7L (auto, obviously) and want to know what trans fluid to run. The Manual gives some Toyota fluid which is expensive, and the parts stores have given me every answer possible.
I don't mind paying top $ for fluid, but I want a top dollar fluid in that instance.
The truck sees about 15k miles/year all towing at near full load. I have a 2nd trans cooler and constantly monitor the temps.
If someone wants to point me to an existing discussion, happy to read. Just couldn't find anything conclusive in a search.
Stick with toyota T-IV trans fluid. Manual states that it requires only T-IV trans fluid. No one other than toyota has is it. However, there are supposedly other brands that state they are equal to T-IV.
I used MOBIL 1 ATF synthetic when I had it serviced at 70,000.

I put in some of that Royal Purple MAX ATF fluid when i did a drain and refill of the pan a while back. Mainly because nobody had the Mobil 1 i wanted. I think its supposed to be pretty good, but its also quite expensive. around 10 bucks a quart i believe.

Does the 2000 model use the T-IV fluid? .........just wondering
I just did this service, the 2000 does NOT need T-IV, you can use Dextron III as I did. I did a simple service, drain and fill, changed my plugs and put on a new serpintine belt all for about $80. saved a bunch. good luck. CSM-H
Dealer told me I had to use T-IV and nothing else. I could have saved some money. ARGH. Oh well. Thanks for the info and correction.
I thought that the Dexron III was what I had used. My question if I were you would be is there any adverse consequences of not using the recommended fluid?

Mitch as it is stated in the tread, if your vehicle needs/requires a certain fluid then you need to use it. What started this conversation was the need to use T-IV. If your truck, depending on it's years states use X fluid then you need to use that type, especially if it's still in warrenty. hope this helps, CSM-H
The info above is from the 2000 - 2005 Tundra Service Manuals. Per

I think you misunderstood my post. I know that I need to use Dexron III (or II) because I have used it before and that is what a 2000 Tundra requires.
I was talking to dyogim about the fact the dealer had told him to use the T-IV fluid when he should have used Dexron II or III fluid. I was wondering if that would cause a problem for dyogim's transmission.

Hey Scott,
Take a look at Royal Purple Max ATF. I use it on my '02 w/good results. A great shop to buy it at is KARL RACING Their 5 gal pails go for 116.99 shipped to your door.......
You'll need approx 16 qts to do a "flush" at a shop and a little less if you do it yourself.

Not sure how much of an effect it would cause. Now I'm wondering if I should fully flush my tranny with Dexron III or leave the T-IV in their.
