Default 2000 Tundra blinking 4wd light problem

My 2000 4wd Tundra is a fine vehicle, expect that
the 4wd light blinks when it is NOT in 4wd. Two
reputable mechanics have not been able to definitively determine
the problem, but theorize that it's the 4wd actuator. It has, however,
been determined that currently the vehicle is NOT in 4wd when the light blinks. I'm told that if it is the actuator, that it'll cost between 500 and
700 dollars to replace. A high price to pay to turn off a blinking light.
Black tape could also "solve" the problem.

Has anyone out there experienced this problem, and if so, what coarse of
action did you take, if any?

TIA
An almost happy Tundra owner

I bought an '04 DC that did this on the 3rd day I owned it. It turned out to be the actuator. I am not familiar with how the actuator is involved in engaging the 4wd but I do know that it requires some work to get to it to replace it. I believe it requires dropping the transfer case. I would at the least inquire to a service manager that you have found it to be an issue with other Tundras.
