1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "LSD question", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hello from the new guy, so if any of this comes across as ignorant...it's probably because it is.
I recently purchased a 2004 SR5 4x4 Tundra (love it BTW). It is not a TRD truck, and I'm pretty sure that it does not have a limited slip differential, which I would like to have installed in the future.
My problem is that I'm not 100 percent sure that it doesn't already have an LSD, because it has certain options that, if I'm not mistaken, aren't stock on the SR5s such as flared fenders, integrated mud flaps, and fog lamps. I would hate to go to all the expense of installing an LSD only to find that out too late that I've already got one.
Is there a simple way to determine if my truck has an LSD short of opening it up and looking directly at it?
What's the difference between the LSD that my obviously Tundra has, and the Automatic LSD that's indicated in the owner's manual? That Auto LSD has it's own idiot light on the dash, and it's own button next to the 4WD buttons...neither of which I have.

Thanks again.
"Auto LSD" isn't really an LSD; it's a computerized braking system that SIMULATES an LSD by preferentially applying braking to whichever wheel on the axle is spinning faster, so that the other wheel is accelerated more.
This system can't be used all the time or for very long periods without causing excessive wear on the brake pads or shoes. If you live somewhere that has a lot of slippery driving surfaces, be glad that you have a REAL limited-slip differential.
Of course, a real LSD will eventually wear out its discs, and it requires special LSD oil in the differential. You pays your money and you makes your choice.

Where can I get the LSD sticker. I had the TRD LSD installed and I don't want the dealer to put the wrong oil/lube. Speaking of oil, how often should it be changed (how many miles) and what type of oil and brand is recommended? I have been told to use Redline LSD lube. Thanks again!
LSD??? Man, when you're a child of the Sixties, a topic like this can have a completely different meaning....
Glad to see you aren't discussing drugs....that would just be wrong.
I have thought about an aftermarket limited slip, and have a resource locally. But, what have people used and found to be satisfactory....and affordable?

What's the difference between the Auto LSD mode and the normal traction control. While Auto LSD is off, you still hear/see the traction control kicking in. If the traction control works all the time, then what possible advantage is there with Auto LSD?

I used the AMSOIL 75w90 gear lube in mine, with one of their 4oz bottles of LSD additive. No complaints, and the lube is supposed to last 500,000 miles or some crazy ****, so in other words I will not be changing it again between now and when I sell the truck. I used that lube in the rear and front diff, and the T-case (obviously just putting the additive in the rear).
