1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Temperature Sensor", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
If you have an outside temperature guage that always reads too high, here is a fix. I bought an '05 Tundra that had the self-dimming mirror with compass and outside temperature, but the temperature gauge always read at least 5-10 degrees hotter than the actual outside temperature. After searching through the front end of the truck, I found the temperature sensor clipped onto the truck frame behind the front bumper, just below and in front of the radiator. I unclipped it from the frame and clipped it to the plastic grill in the front bumper, with the rounded point of the sensor just sticking out through the front. Now the gauge always reads within 1-2 degrees of the actual outside temperature.
I was hoping there was a fix for inaccurate temp sensors.
Several times this summer mine read 120 degrees. It was hot but not that hot (more like 112). I'll have to try to do the relocation also.

Thanks! Mine seems to read too high also, I will apply the mod. I have the Exon brand autodimming mirror with the UV sensor/compass/temp/dimming. I may want to get the Gentex brand Autodimming mirror because I want the one with Homelink. It sucks having to transfer garage door openers between cars. Yeah I can always buy another remote but it's cool to be "JamesBond-like" and have it integrated to a mirror. I would lose the UV sensor that let's you know when UV rays are high so you can protect yourself from burning.
Yeah, one night around dusk, I was sitting with the truck idling, waiting to pick somebody up. It was about 85-90 degrees outside, and the sensor was reading 120+. I tried relocating it to two or three different places, and putting it through the grill produced the most accurate results. About the only time it reads high now is if you are sitting still, and the sun is shining directly on it. But once you start moving, it's okay again. Good luck.
Went out and did a quick look see under the hood. I suppose the temp sensor is behind the skid plate? While there I noticed some oil on the top of the skid plate and it came from the AC connection to the radiator deal (condensor?). I hope I didn't lose too much freon but I was able to tighten the screw quite a bit.
It may be. On mine, it was clipped right on top of the frame, just behind the bumper, near the radiator. Mine had a pair of small wires leading to it, one black and one black with a green stripe. I was able to trace them all the way from where they came through the firewall near the steering column up to the sensor itself.
I still haven't got around to removing the skid plate to check out the temp sensor, but the AC fitting to the condensor still leaked. I took it to another dealership yesterday since the one where I bought it is over 15 miles away. They couldn't have been nicer even though I didn't buy it there and do my own maintenance. Long story short, it was a bad o-ring but they had to evacuate the system and recharge it. It actually was still blowing cold when I took it in but now it's really cold.
I have the same problem with the temp guage reading 10-15 degrees too high. I tried to have the dealership order me a new guage, but they could NOT find the part number for a '05 Tundra. They ordered me a #88790-22131 which is for a Sequoia and this does not work.
