1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Truck sags with new shell", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I got an new ARE shell for my 05 stepside. It is a pretty heavy shell for the size of it and is making my truck sag in the rear. What is the best way to level the truck back up? Air bags, stiffer springs, add-a-leaf? It is a TRD 4x4 if that makes any difference. Thanks for any help

Had the same issue- you'll prolly notice more body roll as well when heading into a corner. I 1st went with a helper spring, but ended up doing an add-a-leaf(s)

Can't tell you for sure on the Tundra, but on two different full size trucks that I've put add-a-leaf's on, it raised the rear end about 2" when unloaded...so, if you take the shell off, it will look a little "jacked up". I don't think replacing the entire leaf spring assembly is the greatest idea either... I had a buddy that did that on a truck with a camper and it still sagged because the "stiffer" springs were very progressive, and did not really start to resist the heavier load until they had quite a bit of weight on them. This was on a chevy, and I don't know what is available out there for the Tundra.
Add-a-leaf is very effective and relatively cheap.
There is always air adjustable shocks, but I have not had the best of luck with those, and I don't really like the idea of putting more load on the shock mounts.
The RAS looks like a darn good idea. How does it affect the ride when you are unloaded, but on a washboard road with the suspension moving a lot?
Is the threaded rod subject to getting bent, or is it simply under tension?
Looks like the price for a tundra is a bit over $200.00, but that's no big deal if it indeed takes care of the sagging issue and takes away the need for a sway bar.
I put RAS in my Tundra 2 years ago & it's great. If you follow the instructions that come with the kit, it's a snap to put in. I don't have alot of fancy equipment and it took me about 2 hrs. I've never had or heard of the rod getting bent. As far as ride, I really didn't feel any difference. I noticed a bigger difference in ride (harder) when I put the Bilsteins in. When the truck has no weight in it, it sits about 2" higher in the back. If you put that heavy cap on, it will probably drop a fraction. I'm not a big fan of air bags, so the RAS seemed like a good alternative. So far I've been more than happy with the performance. It sounds like it's gone up in price though.....I only paid $147 cdn.
Good Luck.
Wow that must be one heavy shell. My 05 Tundra 4x4 already looks like it is jacked up in the rear from the factory, I would think putting a shell on if anything might just level it out nice. But to make it sag, how much does it weigh?
:Yea, its a very heavy shell. A.R.E. shells are pretty thick fiberglass. But one of the best made shells out there. My truck doesnt sag a lot, maybe a half inch, but I dont want ANY. sagging
There was a post where a guy thought his stepside 4x4 had softer springs than a standard bed truck as well. So, they may be part of the problem. I need to call Toyota and find out if there are two differnent part numbers between the two types of trucks.
The RAS looks sweet, I may have to check into that. You guys that have them, did you get the light or heavy duty version? The link H2O_MAN provided above has the lighter one for $169.
Thanks for all the replies!

theae trucks always sit hi in the back at least 1,5 to 2 inchs so if yours sags 1/2 inch then its highter than level

My truck never sat higher in the back and its only 2 months old, so its not wore out springs or anything like that. It sat pretty level before I added the shell. A couple hundred pounds in the bed would make the truck sag slightly in the rear before I put the shell on. Now, with the shell on, it still drops slightly, with any weight at all in the rear, it really sags. I wouldnt mind if the truck had a slight rake when it was empty, but it sat perfectly level before. Maybe the 2wd trucks have a slight rake to them, but mine sure didnt.
