1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Cruise Control Prolbem", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I must now define the highway closest to my house as a steep hill.
It wouldn't make a bowling ball roll, but it will make the rpm's hit the peg.
So far, this is my biggest complaint about my Tundra, so I'll live with it. Can't quite bring myself to part with over $600.00 for the Uni-Chip...great as it might be. The wife would never understand it.
My 02 Tundra does it, my 04 Sequoia does it, my Parents 05 Tundra does it.
My 85 Toyota 4x4 did it. My 2002 camry did it.
Garth has the best cure if it bothers you that much;

Now what I do, is dis-engage on the entrance to hills, and re-engage, once at the top....
Its just like you manually downshifting, only your letting a computer decide when to do it.

My '03 was hyperactive, but I found that if I manually locked out overdrive as I approached the hill, it would be enough to keep the cruise from dropping it down to 2nd and hitting the redline.

I've complained about this cruise control issue to my dealer everytime I've taken in. They always says its normal. Then again, this is my first Toyota and I really expected more.
As for a hill, how about IH 35 between Austin and San Marcos? Yep, not much for hills there but in that stretch, my cruise will double downshift from the set 75mph when it slows to 72, then it will accelerate to almost 80 before it lets back off and coast back down to the set 75.
Come on, Toyota, my 10 year old Cadillac cruise control works better than this!
Weird, I wonder how we could defined these grades to compare? I drive home on US 27 which is a uphill grade out of the Great Miami river valley. Its not a steep grade but its up hill for about 8-10 miles. Gradual grade is how I would describe it. My cruse has never done this, it's always rock steady.
