This is a discussion thread titled "Hose clamp overlap? Help", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Did the hose clamp mod today temporary till I get some high angles. To which side should the inner CV clamp overlap? Overlap the clamp to the fin side of the boots groove or overlap onto the end of the boot (diff side)? Only my inner was spewing at the Joint not on the shaft side of the boot. Those factory ones do suck they were loose when I ttok them off.
Probably going to lower my Coilover about a 1/2" to just under 3" till I replace boots
FUTURE MODS:warn transformer, winch, Shell, Kenwood ddx 7015 mp3,dvd,w/nav, visualogic headrest monitors, black head & tail lights, lose the rest of the chrome, etc.. more OT at work, flipping burgers PT at IN & OUT, man whore etc to pay for it all. http://users.adelphia.net/~crapmaster/
Reason for asking is, is the hose clamp more apt to cut into the OEM boot since it doesn't fit groove properly? I think I'll try Nappa for a tool and band it clamps also until I get 930's or the offroadsolutions set.
Don't really want to change them till I have to but I'll buy them now anyway. How hard is the replacement of inner only?

tool costs about five bucks...handy to have around. the ors set is nice...i see it comes in bling bling red now. i have the original black, and havent had a problem...wish there were outer boots as nice, since i lifted and installed those boots, the outers have been the ones giving me all the trouble. theyre worth the 50 bucks, also i think those are the same as the 930 boots from kartek.

inner replacement means time and patience, and it's messy...cv grease = truck snot. if you want to diy, make sure you have a floor jack, jack stands, large torque wrench, wide range (10mm and up) of metric sockets, snap ring pliers, band clamp pliers, tub o' cv grease, lots of plastic gloves, lots of paper towels, and good lighting. it's not bad, just takes time and patience.
Hope the wide clamps will be good enough for the drive today, abou 60 miles. I see the smaller clamps are narrower I'll try and pick some up that width and use two or get band it kind at a good autoparts store, if there is one (napa maybe in stanton). Autozone, Pep boys and Kragen pretty useless.
I work in a Lumber yard/Harware store and have more stuff, just not the narrow clamps. Check Lowes on way to Laguna this AM. Got tools in truck to change em.
Yeah that CV grease is something just trying to clean off seal edges of boot is a pain.

I used heavy duty Zip-Ties - worked very well for over 100K miles.
Hmmm... never heard of that, or for that matter... thought of that?! Fact is though, that actually sounds like a MUCH better solution than the metal hose clamps, which would actually "decrease" the chance for the overlap issue! Plus they're probably VERY close to the exact same size as the stock boot clamps in width. for the in-put there Jeff!
The only other soution, which I know of, is a simple diff drop kit. They aren't very expensive, but using one will require some small modification to the skid plate.

Went to Napa got the band type clamps and banding tool (24.00 for the tool .92 for the bands). They will definitely fit the groove no overlap and they can be cranked down a little tighter. I'll take some pics when I change them out this afternoon.
Still gonna drop the coils about 1/2" to get just under 3" just to relieve some of the extra stress on the CV's, reclamp the inners and see how it goes. That might be enough for awhile without changing to the 930's.
Zip ties sounds good too, I wonder if I can use those with the same tool? It just spins the band till you bend it back over clip, should be able to cinch a zip tie down pretty good. I'll let ya know.
Thanks Sean, for your advice too, I really didn't like the overlap thing, gotta cut into boot over time. I already do have the diff drop in, just cranked coils up too much thinking they would settle more. Oh well 2.75-3.00" in the front still will be pretty close to level with the rear 1.5" block who'll know but me. Hmmm that's what sucks I'll know
Adjustment here, Adjustment there and a couple of tra la la's. That's we mod our trucks in the merry old land of Tundra Solutions.
