1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "who changes their own oil?", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I've been using regular dino Pennzoil 5w30 and purolator filters since new, but while at the AdvanceAuto store they had the Pennzoil full synth with a $15 rebate on 6 quarts so i bought that for the winter months. Guess we'll see how it does.
BTW , I use one trip odometer for oil changes and the other for gas mileage.

I change my own oil, Mobil 1 with TRD filter......and, in fact, do just about ANYTHING that needs to be done, as long as its a bolt-off / bolt-on job. It saves a ton of cash on labor, but also feels good to do your own repairs/mods. Of course if there is a PROBLEM, then its going to the shop....
Aloha, Garey

I change my oil at 5,000 miles with Amsoil 5W30 and a amsoil filter. While commonly have the tires rotated at the shop down the street where I bought the tires (typically shops will give you free rotation for the lifetime of the tires). At work we tell all our customers to rotate and 5,000 miles as if you constantly do it before 4,000 miles it is almost as if you didn't rotate your tires as you are not putting enough miles on the tires.

I also change my own oil on my Tundra and our other two cars. I recently changed the Tundra over to Mobile 1 and also synth gear oil in the diffs and trans. case. I try to do as much of my own maintenance work at home if possible. I don't trust other people working on my vehicles and am very particular and would rather do it myself. I just went through an ordeal with a tireshop that butchered up one of the wheels and also cracked the tire pressure sensor on my 05 Tundra and then denied it.
Case of ten Denso filters from a dealership having a sale or from one of the mailorder discount dealerships.

I rotate tires every 3,000 miles with my oil. And to keep things simple, if I changed the oil at 3,200 miles, I still change again at 6,000 miles... With the tire rotation, as well. Get it all done at once, and nothing difficult to remember -- it's easy to see when the odo reaches a multiple of 3,000.
I use to do the same thing but since I switched to Mobil 1 and K&N filters (some on other threads don't like K&N) I change oil and rotate every 5000 miles instead of 3000 miles. The oil is still amost the same color at 5000 miles as it was when it came out of the bottle. I don't change my own oil but the mechanic at a local shop lets me help him take off the skid plate (with a hand tool not an impact wrench). He also let's me rotate my own tires while it is on the axle lift as I like to wash out the brake residue from the front wheels before I put them on the back. I slip him $5 for letting me "assist" and he's a happy camper. I buy my own parts and the whole thing usually costs about $45 for the labor, parts, and my $5 "kicker" but I know it is done right (or at least to my satisfaction). That's one advantage of living in a smaller town (15K population).
At age 60, I still continue to do my on oil changes and overall maintenance, a practice of 45 years. When I discovered the 2004 filters geing phased out, I ordered 3 dozen. When they're gone, I'll likely continue to use Toyota Denso oil filters. Oil changes every 4 to 5K cold weather and 5 to 7K hot weather. Also, I believe in Toyota air filters every 15K (dusty West Texas), Toyota Red anti-freeze every 2 years, and T-IV pan drains every 15K. These V-8 Tundras are solid little half-tons, once you are able to get the vibration problems solved. RWK, DJ & GeorgeSEQ are among the posters who have taught me a lot and...while certainly no expert, I'm not a novice at auto care and repair.
I change my oil every 3000 miles. I use Castrol 5-30 and add a quart of Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer every oil change. I'am hoping to get 400,000 - 500,000 miles out of the engine. They have products for Transmissions, Differentials and Power Steering Units also. I also use 1 bottle of Fuel Treatment in Every tank of gas. I buy the quart and fill the small bottle (treats 25 Gal.) http://www.lucasoil.com/ Great Products, check them out and post replies please. I have been using this product for years now.
What happen if something major happened to the engine when you change oil yourself? If you purchase extended warranty and there is no record at the dealership for oil change. How do you prove to them the you change your oil on time?
So-called extended warranties are a concern. They are legally not warranties, they are service contracts. As such, you are bound by the exact wording in the fine print. If it says that you must have a dealership oil change every 3000 miles, and you get one at 3001 miles, you have just voided the service contract you paid all that money for. This is an exaggeration, but you only know what you're faced with if you read that fine print.
