1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "2005 Tundra Check Engine Light On", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I hate when this happens in any vehicle. I took the truck to AutoZone to have them check it with their computer, and it couldn't log on. This leads me to believe that Toyota has a special computer link on their 2005's that only the service department can look at. I'm under Warranty of course with my 2005, btu hate to wait 2-3 hours. I'm under 10,000 miles. Just curious if anyone else had any early issues like this withy their Tundra?
I know the '05 uses a CAN interface which is different from the ISO interface that the older tundras used. it is interesting that they use the same connector, but I had to get a new cable to be able to connect my scantool to the '05

When I got my 2005 DC from the dealer the check engine light was on (yeah, it takes a little of the new truck buzz out of you) - was the oxygen sensor.
Could be gas cap. Mine did the same thing around 10,000 miles. Make sure it clicks 3 times and do not overfill. The light will reset after about 60+ engine cranks.
If you feel it is something serious take it in though. I had no engine noises, fluids full and I knew it was possible that I may have overfilled or not clicked enough so I just let it reset itself.

I also had the check engine light come on shortly after I got my 05 Tundra. When I took it to the dealer it turned out to be the front right oxygen sensor. They replaced it and about an hour later the engine light came on again. When I took it back, oxygen sensor again except it was the right rear this time. No problems since.
I had it come on and the dealer told me it was the O2 sensor as well, but I was out of warranty. Then I read on another Toyota forum about the gas cap issue. Tightened it up, cycled the starter a couple of times and it went out. It has happened twice again since then, same thing. I just have to be careful about hearing the click.
My wife has Prius, and exactly the same thing happened, with the same results. Methinks Toyota has a thang goin on here with getting people to replace O2 sensors needlessly. If you get the light come on, tighten your gas cap and start it a few times. If it doesn't go away in a few days, THEN take it in.
Thanks for the replies. I did reset it by pulling off the battery cable for only 30 seconds though and it stayed off so far for about 100 miles so far.
Well, mine just came on this week. It came on when I was driving in 4 wheel drive for the first time in a while and about 5 seconds after I turned the A/C on for the defog.
Who knows if any of that has anything to do with the light coming on, and the truck sounds and feels fine when I drive it. I'm going to try a few turns on the gas cap and disconnecting the battery first. If it comes on again, I'll have it checked out.
It's disappointing though, considering how many of us buy toyota because these annoyances are supposed to be less common. Maybe this is a fluke, but it's strike one for tundra in my book! I still love the truck though (for now )
I just got an 05 and have less than 2000 miles and the check engine light came on. It feels as if there is no power on any kind of incline so I called toyota and said come get your truck ......hopefully I hear from them today.
I disconnected the battery and made a few turns on the gas cap and the light hasn't come on after about 50 miles.
Why can't they just have the error code(s) come up on the dashboard instead of that useless check engine light!!! I've never understood that. If there's more than one error it can just cycle through them, scroll them or banner them in a field the same size as the check engine light.
Could these problems be associated with the TSB EG060-05 that came out around the middle of Nov? Looks like they have to replace the A/F sensor.
If the A/F sensor is sending false info, could it cause other sensors to fail?
Just a thought.........
