Default Gas Mileage In Cold Weather

Just curious what other Tundra owners are getting for gas mileage in temps below 40 degrees. I typically get pretty decent gas mileage in the summer with 18-20 mpg with my 00 V8 4 X 4.

Living in Anchorage, AK we typically don't have to use are AC much so that certainly helps with the gas mileage. But as the temps. have dropped I've already noticed that my gas mileage has slipped to about 14-16 mpg with no change in the way I drive. I know that gas mileage typically drops as the temp. drops.

Any other fed back from other people's experience would be great!!

I'd consider myself very fortunate to see 18-20 mpg in the summer. My highest summer mileage ever was 18 and it's usually around 16.5 to 17.3. Winter runs 14-16 here in Minnesota. Our fuel is 10% ethanol to support the local farmers which knocks the mileage down.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????

With my 05 Tundra 4x4 I was getting 10 mpg city and about 17 highway last winter. In summer it went up to about 13 city and 20 highway. This is in Imperial gallons.

Unless you've disconnected the wire, your AC runs when you have the ventilation set to defrost or combination heat & defrost.

I thought that the compressor only turned on when you turned the AC on. So basically I don't need to turn the AC on when I select defrost?

I guess maybe that's why my gas mileage drops so much. Are maybe I'm just greedy when I get 20 mpg in the summer.

I notice my gas milage drops as the temperature drops.Partly to blame for this is the gasoline itself. Before the winter the oil refineries change the formulation of gasoline to a winter blend.Basically the winter gas is a lighter more volatile fuel and it contains less energy per volume and therefore worst milage.

I also live in Alaska. Although I am out in Eagle River. I imagine we buy gas from a lot of the same sources. I have a 2001 with 33 inch tires tires so I have never seen 18 MPG, I normally get 16.5 in the summer and drop to 12-14 in the winters. Most of my driving is between ER and Anchorage or Elmendorf. I normally drive around 70 MPH and know I could improve the milage by dropping down to 60-65 but would prefer to stay with the flow of traffic. Besides, in the winter I drive much slower and my gas mileage is worse yet.

My personal opinion is you are doing about normal for a Tundra.
