I sent an inquiry to Toyota with my VIN and they finally answered . . . open diff.

Here is their direct quote:

We have researched your VIN and determined that your 2003 Tundra is equipped with an open type differential.
We apologize, the available limited slip option for your 2003 Tundra is only available as a factory-installed option at the time of manufacturing. A dealership-installation kit is currently not available.

Default same run-around on post sale lsd option - not true!

thought i'd chime in on this as am going through a similar thing right now with an 04 double cab.

i bought the truck in georgia with the trd package, and the car lot (not a toyo dealer) where I got it, listed it as having the lsd option although the window sticker didn't show it. i assumed it was part of the trd package (wrong!) and just to be sure i test drove the truck and experimented to convince myself the lsd was in there. burned some rubber in reverse on a side road, yep, two black marks. spun out in a little stretch of dirt road, yep, two roughed up tracks. even called the local toyota dealer - yep, the doublecab trds came with "tokicos instead of bilstiens so no blue and yellow shocks and the lsd" (wrong).

one day back in the midwest i was being adventurous and started treading lightly into a muddy field. whole right side of the truck was in a muddy puddle. no problem, i thought, i have lsd, i'll motor right through this. (wrong) barely got out in reverse in 4 wheel.

a little "real" dealer research (they ran the VIN) and no, my truck does not have lsd. also, there are some codes on the driver's door that suggest this, but they are cryptic and i've had a hard time finding a key to the codes that is consistant. my local dealer in missouri told me this: most of the trd doublecabs sold in our area do have the lsd as the factory option. but, some guy (i forget his name) controls they way a lot of the tundras come to market in the southwest states. the way they explained it to me, his company has exclusive rights to configure the trucks in certain states and they come out with some strange (maybe not for the south?) setups. turns out mine has regular shocks, no lsd but does have the anti-sway bar up front and the trd sticker (oh my gosh, i'm soooo lucky!)

explanation: in both of the cases during my "test drive" the tires had roughly equal footing so both were reluctant to let go. the open diff sent the power to the loosest side, but neither side was really that much looser, so they both gave equally. in the muddy field, right side was way looser, so all power went to that side (both back and front since both have open diffs) and i barely got out with a little pride.

solution: just orderd the trd kazuma lsd from carson toyota in california. www.newtoyotaparts.com they have assured me this unit will fit in my 04 doublecab. it is sitting right next to me in my office as i write this. $300 including freight. i priced having the local toyota dealer install it - they want over 500 in labor. i'm letting my local transaxle shop do it for around $275. that plus a shim kit and the diff carrier gasket and i'll have the whole thing wrapped up for under $650.

lesson learned: even when you think your getting what you paid for, you still might not be. (what you inspect, not expect, right?) i could have kicked myself. what a deal - a $250 factory option for slightly more than twice that!

so, it seems it should be available for your truck. the paperwork that came with mine says all tundras 2000 and newer. and, unless i'm mistaken, the kazuma lsd has higher clutch pre-tension then the original factory units so might be a bit more industrial on the double cab application...

anyone feel free to add corrections if i have some of this wrong...

Another lesson learned. I ordered my tundra with factory lsd. It's basically worthless, as I have posted previously. And no, it was not part of the TRD package. It would be nice if toyota engineers and marketing followed this forum, because they'd learn there's a big market out here for the right equipment: Good rear leaf springs, Good LSD, Good shocks (HD Bilsteins), rear sway bar...... I think they should offer a HD suspension package like the domestics do.

I just went from an open to a LSD in my new truck. I went and played in the snow today and it makes a HUGE difference. No more spinning and not going anywhere.

My experience with my LSD (ordered with my truck) is it did not perform in the conditions that I had in mind when I ordered it. My driveway is inclined gravel, and I can't count on the lsd to pull me (really push) when the weight of the body rolls to one side and one rear tire has less traction. The wheel that's light just spins and makes a gravel divot, while the other one with the weight on it just sits there, and the truck rolls dowhhill.

I had the dealer tech check it, and he said it was to toyota specs. He also acknowledged that it is "just a ""limited slip"" differential".....translation...wimpy.

It may work ok on straight patches were the rear wheel conditions are not much different. I'd guess that if your truck (above post) was one wheel in the slushy muck and the other on wet pavement, the muck wheel will spin.

I kinda lucked out for a change. I bought my 04 Access cab Tundra from a used car outfit.

As I was getting acclimated with my new truck, I started noticing that it had certain things that weren't on the spec sheet provided by the dealership. Things like the towing package and the all weather guard package.

So I'm like, "I wonder..."

I check under the rear and sure enough...LSD oil only.

Too much fabbing on the rear tundra housing to make it work. It can be done though.

Part online was around $ 325 back in June

Had it installed last week for around $ 375 from my mechanic, including diff sealant and fluid.

i have a 2000 trd toyota did not put a lsd in tundras until 2002 i called toyota of america when i was having problems with me rear end thought that lsd was acting up, that is when i found out that i had major problems because their was no lsd avalible until 2002, even though mine would smolder both back tires on dry pavement. Tured out my spider gears took a crap and the metal chunks got lodged and caused the lsd type effect of chattering when turning corners! Thank god it was still under warranty because the 3rd member cost around $3,000.00 from toyota!

The original differential has two spider gears. The TRD-Eaton LSD unit has three spider gears for more strength. I don't know what the Detroit has.
