Default Strange Noise @ 80 MPH

This one has me stumped. My '02 Limited AC has a noise/vibration @ ~ 80 mph that I can't ID. These are symptoms:

Only occurs while accelerating or under load between 79 - 83 mph. Starts as a low hum and builds to max intensity around 81, gone by 84. You can hear and feel it in the floor. Does not seem to be engine speed related, 3rd or 4th gear noise is the same, 1st and 2nd no noise at same engine RPM. Interestingly, the noise does not occur with the bed loaded (my BMW k12rs is about 650 lb, with it in the back - no noise). Does not seem to be any louder while towing (Grady White ~ 4500lbs, tongue load ~250 lbs) but is still there.

Dealer tried aligning exhaust (stock, single outlet) Tightening bed bolts and everything else under the truck. Adding the hellwig didn't effect the symptoms.

My thoughts are drive shaft vibration, maybe alignment between the shaft and rear since loading the bed makes it go away. Dealer can't find it and we just passed the 60K mark so toyota says I'm on my own.

Anyone have an idea?

tires. tyres. tighers.
That is what I would check. I had some fibration issues with the original skins on my 04. I put a set of Toyo Proxes ST's on-gone.

Agree on the tires. A load in the bed changes the tire profile, so that's probably why it goes away.

Well then, forget the tires. Guess your initial thought of driveline/rear end geometry changing when loaded is the best thought.

Sounds like you might be spending a little $$ to go through the elimination process.

I guess this is a good reason to buy extended warranties, even for a Toyota. I'm looking at one right now that I will probably buy.

I also get an annoying noise when I go over 75mph, but it only seems to happen when my wife is in the truck. I might try duct tape on that one.

Both of mine do that, I think it is normal. It is most notable in 3rd gear accelerating through 80 mph. I believe it is u-joints or the center support bearing. There is some kind of resonance that only occurs at that speed. I wouldn't worry about it unless it has gotten worse over time.

the only noise i hear at 80 is the wind sounding like its trying to rip my doors off. I don't konw if its the mirrors or the doors, but its quite loud. Sorry i can't contribute to the location of your aforementioned noise. Although, it could have somthing to do with the torque converter? hows your tranny & diff fluid? Any leaks?

You're the first I've heard with the same issue. My concern is the noise is an indicator of an expensive problem getting started. Naturally it first appeared well before the 60K point, but since the dealer couldn't ID it and effect a repair - Toyota says its all on me now.

How many miles have you been experiencing this? I've noticed it over the last 25k (can't say it wasn't there before, I thought it was the tires so I ignored it for about a year).

I don't remember when it started on my old truck. I didn't really notice it until around 60k or 80k, it continued on until I sold the truck with over 200K. I don't think it ever got any worse, I just became more aware of it.

When I got the '05 - I noticed it right away, At this point I only have 18K on it and it sounds about the same or possibly a little louder than my '00. It does not seem to be getting any worse.

my dad had the same vibration problem in his 02'. his ended up being the front brake pads were constantly rubbing the disc causing it to warp.... the vibration was only noticable between 78-85 and sometimes when braking... toyota told my dad it was a flaw and replaced the front brake rotors, calipers and pads.....so i'd say give it a shot.

Try the tranny and engine motor mounts.
