1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Online Poll: Check Engine Light", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Ok, looking for some pre-Xmas fun? My check engine light came on Sunday Morning when i started the Tundra to go out with the familly to cut our Xmas tree. It stayed on all day. Monday morning I lifted the the negative terminal on the battery and the check light cleared itself, but came back later in the day. It's going into my mechanics shop next week for a oil, tranny fluid, tire rotation. He will put the code reader on it at that time. Anyone want to start a poll what the issue might be? Here is some background info to help make your guess:
It's a 2000 Tundra Limited 4.7L with about 100k miles.
It's been well maintained.
It has been and continues to run well.
O2 sensors have never been changed.
I checked the gas cap, it is tight.
On Sat. I burnt 1/2 tank of gas bouncing around frozen corn fields pounding in snowmobile trail stakes.
I live in Canada, so it currently about 20 deg.
Good luck, I will post the answer when I find out (assuming the code reader will work with the Tundra)
Scott
The light has never came on before.

I would have to agree, burning that much fuel would mean that good 'ol O2 sensor is bad. It will periodically clear and come back. Mine did this for a while.
Mine went out 2 months ago on my 01' at around 75k. The dealer I took mine to voluntarilly changed both exhaust manifolds in the process too! I'm not sure why... maybe because they may damage them taking the sensors out is all I can figure. It was all under the O2 warranty extension too. Good thing I had that Toyota letter with me. They took about 7 hours to do the whole job.

#1 choice would be CODE P0171 Clean MAF and loose the K&N
#2 choice 02 Sensor(s)
#3 p0420/P0430 -- cold cornfield pounding-- may hurt cat converters
#4 Loose the K&N anyways

My 00 Totalled Tundra had that issue a week before the accident but I didn't bother to fix it. I was smart enought to disconnect the battery head to the Georgia emmission place and passed emmissions afterward's the light came back on (dam)...Tundra's from 00 to 02 are well knowen to have these problem's...My 04 TUndra that has 18k I took in today has a bad charcoal canister that cause My check engine light to come on I was WTF Not again on my newer Tundra
P.s The K and N does not have any affect nor should this on the Light I've had mine in both Tundra's without any issues so those saying that are full of ????

Good chance it is an O2 sensor - But - you need to read the code to know for sure. There are many reasons the check engine light or MIL comes on.

what wrong with them Had one on my 00 tundra with 125k on miles not one issue period ...???
Have the same k and N and took that out of my old tundra and using this on My newer tundra and still no issues..
Your 1 of the lucky ones.
EVERY K&N'd TUNDRA that has come into the shop has a P0171 and a messed up MAF SENSOR. Clean the sensor, installed stock A/F, never had another issue. Sometimes they work and sometimes they dont. The older K&N's oil was not compatable with Toyota sensors especially after combustion, and the intake tubes were to small. They have since updated both.
Lets see:

Oop's forgot on other thing that might make a difference.
I recently installed a K&N air filter.
No check engine light--->installed K&N------> check engine light
Might be a coincidence,might not

This is also typical of a dirty (oily) MAF. 02's will usually kick on the ENGINE LIGHT and the computer will run in the LIMP HOME mode, so as not to damage the CATS, but it is very very possible also.
. 02's are definatly right up there for fault.
If the MAf is dirty (oily) the computer has not control over trying to fix it. It has to have a air flow signal in order to run.
He definatly needs to have to codes read in order to have a direction for diagnosis, and repair.
