'05 Tundra DC.
I had the tire pressure warning light come on at the beginning of the cooler season and I just assumed it was the change in the weather so I adjusted the pressures and the lamp went out. A week or so ago the light came back on but I let it ride because I could see that the tires were not bad. Last night I checked the pressures and they were only 2 to 4 lbs out of spec. I brought them back up but the light stayed on. The dealer said that I needed to check the spare to which I replied "bull". They insisted the spare was in the loop also so I guess I'll check it tonight.
How much tolerance does the system allow, +/- what PSI? Will the system warn if too much pressure?
How can I reset the warning if the pressures are good all around? This is still under warranty so I'm not going to do too much myself.
What all needs to be done when I get new tires?
Lots of ?'s
Thanks
I don't know what the tolerance is either but the reset button is under the steering wheel on the dash. I have slow leaks in 2 of the crappy Bridgestone tires that came with the truck and the light is nearly always on. I guess I'll get around to putting some air in em but wish they would wear out.
I don't know what the tolerances are supposed to be but have had the light come on when one tire was 2-1/2 lbs low.
I have since installed a custom extension hose from the spare to an existing hole in the frame so that i can check/adjust the pressure in the spare easier (i still have the spare valve stem pointing up)
I also purchased some valve stems caps from Walmart that allow you to set the pressure that they monitor and then they have a flashing light if the pressure drops 4 pounds. (not quite the 2-1/2 lb sensitivity of the dash light, but hey)
Now I can look under my rear bumper and see if my spare is flashing.
Tire pressure changes with the ambient temperature. When it starts getting colder the pressure will decrease. My light came on the first night we had a cold spell. It got down to 20 degrees and the light came on. I checked all 5 tires and they were all at 28 lbs. I put them all back up to 35 lbs, and the light went out. The amount of change required to cause the light to come on is 5 lbs from it's programmed pressure. The reset button is what changes the programmed pressure.
Good info, thanks for the replies. How about too much pressure. If the specs call for 29psi and I put in 35 will the warning lamp come on?
No, it only will come on if the pressure goes below the preset.

Can someone explain this to me. I thought if one wheel turned more or less than the others it was sensed and the dash light would come on. How can it tell if the spare is low??? The spare is not moving it's just sitting there. There would have to be some electronic device monitoring pressure and then sending that information wirelessly to some computer somewhere.
No, that's the old (indirect) system, as in my wife's 2001 Sienna. That system operated by taking input information from the ABS sensors at the wheels and comparing their speeds. The 2005-up Tundras have pressure sensors that are part of the valve stems (important to know when dismounting tires, as they can be rather easily broken by technicians unfamiliar with these sensors), and they do transmit data to the vehicle computer. That's why they can be much more sensitive to small pressure differences.
Had a similar problem w/ 05 Sequoia. Temp dropped to 40 one night, the next morning pressure light was active. Check four tires and all were OK. Checked spare and it was @ 24. Filled to 35 and haven't seen light active since.

Thanks guys - i have an 01 Sienna and assumed it was the same thing. I'd assume this system would be the same in Canada. I wonder what the lifespan on the lithium battery is and what it's going to cost us to replace these??
"if the lithium battery is depleted, replace the entire tire pressure sensor assembly"
