Well I have a 2000 Tundra and I have not needed to do anything on the truck except the usual(tires and brakes). I have about 75k miles on it and I was wondering if I should change out the timing belt or not. It just runs so good as it is that it seems happy without me messing with it. Just curious if you think these belts should be changed out?
i'm pretty sure the timimg belts are good for 90,000 on the V8's so you could put it off another year then worry about changing it and possibly the waterpump too(they always try to make you do them both while they are doing it)..not a bad idea as long as they don't rape you for the labor?

belt replacement is set for 90,000. i wouldn't do it early as it is significant expense and i would definitely do the waterpump and thermostat at the same time. i also wouldn't put it off much past the 90,000 mark as you'll be buying a new engine if it breaks. others report it can last longer and doesn't look worn out when replaced, but is that a risk you really want to take?
there are lots of good posts out there in TS land regarding the belt change. after you read, you can decide if you want to tackle it yourself or not. if the dealer does it, expect to drop close to a grand for the convenience and all the parts.
fyi, the truck probably won't run bad before it needs a belt change. it will either break and you're screwed as the valves bash into the pistons at 2500 rpms, or it might skip a tooth and mess up the timing, but that's unlikely. i wish there was a magic window into the belt compartment so a person could see what's going on in there. unfortunately, the crystal ball is cloudy and the 8ball says, change it at 90,000 or.... you might be sorry.... (evil organ music plays)
Is the 4.7L an interference motor? If so, you can bet I'll change mine at 60k ...actually, I'm on a 3 year lease so I won't need to but trust me when I say it's cheap insurance if it's an interference motor to change all belts, pulleys, tensioners and everything else at 60k. The water pump should be good until 120k so no need to do it at the 60k mark.

I am not a gambler, nor ignorant of maintenance concerns. I simply chose not to do the timing belt replacement until over 100k miles.
When I did it, I replaced the timing belt, water pump and thermostat. I honestly don't remember if I had them do the pulleys or tensioners. I was also due for flush of the brake lines and power steering system.
Just my $.02

If you're doing timing belt changes on an interference motor every 100k miles they you ARE gambling with your motor. Period.

I really don't think 100k miles is that much of a gamble, but it really isn't necessary to try to stretch it to that. I'd think if Toyota says 90k miles, they've put in a safety factor of at least 50%. That's just my opinion, and I guess I'm a bit of a gambler. By the time my Tundra reaches 90k miles, I'll have reached 90 years lol.
See my previous posts but the belt was in great shape when it was removed. I just went over 300k TODAY and havent done my second replacement yet. Original water pump too BTW. Heck, it's a Toyota!
