This is a discussion thread titled "2005 Speaker Upgrade", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Ok guys, a quick question. I have 2005 TUndra AC w/o JBL. I do have the solara nav unit so I don't want to change headunits. I want to upgrade the speakers and I know I can't add an amp. My question is if I put either polks or infinity's in the rear and either polk or infinity componets in the front, will I actually hear a difference or will they sound like crap? Anyone put different speakers in without adding an amp in their tundra???? If not these speakers, which ones? I was looking at these becuase thier sensitivity was very high 93db for the rears and 92db for the fronts. Thanks guys.
Richard

Anything should sound better than the stockers, but would of course sound much better with an amp. You would even be suprised how the stock speakers sound when run with a decent amp. Good luck

This guy is sooooo right.
I ran the stock speakers for several months with an old school Fosgate Punch 75.
They sounded great. It almost wasn't worth replacing them.
Exterior Mods: Debadged of labels & insignias, Retrax bed cover, Bedrug bed liner,
AVS hood deflector, Ventvisor window vents, Line of Fire tail light,
Magnaflow Single-out Cat Back System,
Undercarriage courtesy lighting, Silverstar headlights, Muth signal mirrors,
Hellwig rear anti-sway bar, Stant 10506 locking gas cap,
Disconnection of the DRLs.
Interior Mods: Pioneer Premier DEH-P860MP, Terk XM Direct Satellite Radio Package,
Custom enclosure for 10" Fosgate P2 woofer,
Two old school Fosgate Punch 75 amps (each runs a pair of door speakers),
One Fosgate 60i amp on the P2 (runs mono on the sub),
Pioneer TS-D161R 6-1/2" speakers in each door,
Pioneer CD-RB20 for Aux input for MP3 player,
OBX Sport Pedals,
Extreme seat cover for driver's seat.
Please forgive my endless posts. I have an obsession to detail with a touch of ADD.

I know nothing about the solara nav unit.
Why can't you add an amp to this setup?
You might look into the Eclipse 8300 series.....I replaced my JBLs with component Eclipse in the front and Eclipse coax in the back....
Check out ebay for good deals.....I bought my speakers for half of what the auto stereo shop wanted....then had them install them...

Your should be able to add an amp. it will have to have a Good high to low level converter. But then you can put an amp on it no problem. I am running the stock nav and headunit to my whole system with 4,000 watts and it rocks.
You should be able to get this at Best Buy. good luck
Replace stockers with 5.25" speakers that require less power if you don't want to get an amp. The head unit doesn't send out much power, and new speakers will actually sound worse when turned up. This is because they're asking for power that isn't available, so they distort. (Polk and Infinity 5.25" speakers sound decent with low power, but not great)
or
Get a 2-channel amp with components up front and leave the stockers in the rear (best advice)
Since a new HU is out of the question, an amplifier is necessary to do most speakers any justice. Components in the front with the stockers in the rear saves time and sounds great.

On the non-JBL system with the amp in the storage area you can add a line level output if you tap into the amp itself. I've done this on my tundra and it works great. I have a rockford punch 400a4 running the stock speakers - sounds a TON better than the crappy little chip-amps in the stock amp. I've compared some aftermarket headunits with the stock 6-disc in dash radio and think it sounds pretty darn good (but not quite as good as my sony cdxc90es HU in my other car).

yes, that would be a good piece of info to have tucked away for a rainy day! would you kindly post the procedure for tapping a line level analog signal from the factory amp? that will really help us shade tree enthusiasts with our budget constrained upgrades!
i too agree, usually the weakest part of a factory system is the amps, then speakers, then head unit. so, naturally, i would go for the amp upgrade first, see how it sounds, then plan the next step. the factory 8 speaker setup with the jbl 6 disc is pretty good out of the box, though. i wish they would have put in an EQ (another good reason to have the analog line out plan from the factory amp) rather than bass, mid, treble. a confined listening area like in a car greatly benefits from putting the available power towards the frequencies naturally cancelled out in a tight cabin environment.
