Hello Everyone,
I have a 2002 Toyota Tundra Limited 4X4, V-8, with 15,000 miles on it. It came equiped with BF Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A tires. These tires seem that they soon will need to be replaced due to the tread dept remaining. My question is; can anyone tell me what kind of mileage they got on their original tires and what brand they were. Also, I am thinking of replaceing these tires with Mitchelin LTX tires. Has anyone had any experience with these on thier Tundras. I am in the market for a smooth riding, quiet, good traction tire,(in snow). I do not need a "All Terrain" for off roading. I had the Michelin LTX tires on my 1989 Ford F-150 and they seem like great tires.
Also, I got the ball joint recall notice. I was wondering if these defective ball joints could have any effect on the wear of my BF Goodrich Tires? I had these tires rotated every 5K miles and the air pressure was always correct.
I got better than double the mileage on my 1989 F-150 and they where Firestone ATX's.
How is everyone makeing out with the ball joint recall?
I know this is a lot of questions being asked, but if anyone can help me out with some good advice, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Rice Burner
Yeah the BF's were cool but way to soft and I wore them out in 30k. I did go back with 4 Michelin LTX and the truck has 86k on it and still plenty of tread on the Michelins . They are great in the rain as well, not sure about snow I live in houston. Very smooth and quiet, just good all around tires.
The Michelin LTX M/S would probably do what you want. If you look at tirerack.com, the Yokohama Geolander G051 tires also look good for less money. This is probably what I will use after my OEM Bridgestone duellers are shot.
i have the michelin ltx a/t tires on my 2000 4wd tundra i bought from costco after i blew my bfg tires on the freeway. been running on them for about 5 years now and threads still in pretty good shape.
imo, if you're looking for "good traction", you have to put up with some noise and michelin ltx a/t is a bit nosier than the original bf goodrich tires. the first few months anyway....just turn the stereo up a bit to drown down the noise.
been on i-80 to reno, nevada many times in the snow and i never had to put on the snow chains (still carry snow chains...just in case.). you just put on 4wd and drive slower.

My 2000 SR5, Access Cab, 4x4 came with BFG Rugged Trails, as well. I've seen a lot of folks here run these tires down but I had absolutely no complaints. I got more miles out of these tires than any I've ever run before; 55,800 miles w/ 5-tire rotation. Based on favorable reviews on this board, I wanted to go with Yokahama Geolanders but there were none available locally and I was in a bind for new rubber. I wound up taking my tire shop's recommendation of Toyo Open Countrry AT and have been quite pleased with them for the past 30,000 miles. YMMV, as always.
My 03 tundra 4x2 came with the BFG Rugged T/A which lasted about 20,000 miles before needing replacement. I do not have the Michelin LTX's on my truck but do get great reviews from the customers at work, highly recommend the tires from the reviews that I have gotten. Oh, yeah I am currently running Goodyear Wrangler ATS, 285x75x16s w/o a problem.

Michelin LTX M/S are the only tires I'll buy. They are plenty capable for me. They get good wet weather traction, perform well in snow, etc. You can buy them for about $159 each, and they last longer then anything else you can buy. Mine have 55,000+ miles on them now, and I don't plan on replacing them for at least several more months...maybe a year or more. They are far from bald. I've never had a Goodyear Wrangler or BFGoodrich AT last more than 20,000 miles.
Hi Everyone,
Thanks to all for the great response on the Tundra Tires!! I have decided to go with the Michelin LTX M/S tires. I get them for about $155.00 each, complete.
I really do not need a All Terrain Tire and the past LTX's I had on my previous F-150 seemed very capable in the snow. They made the truck handle like a dream, were extremely quiet, and gave it a smooth ride.
The LTX's got great reviews on The tire rack.Com verses the poor results of the BF Goodriches in their customer survey results.
From my personal experience, I think the Rugged Trails gave me very poor service on a truck that has 15K on it and had the tires rotated every 5K.
Has anyone tried to get a response from Toyota linking the ball joint recall and poor tire wear?
Might try Costco. They have Michelins, don't remember which, for $140 complete.
Tire Promotion starts on Monday 1/8/05 I believe it might be Michelin but it could very well be Bridgestone's can't recall .

I have a 2000 Tundra and It had the stock Dunlop grandteks. they were the worst tires I've ever had. I immediatly put Bridgestone dueler AT Revos. Excellent in the snow and rain and very quiet. I plow in the winter and have never had a problem with them ever.
I'm seriously considering a set of the new Goodyear Wranglers. They now come with a "Quiet" layer of Kevlar, and a 50k mi warranty! Anyone had any experience with these yet on their Tundra?
