Question Largest Tires on 17" Stock Wheels (2005 DC)

Does anyone know the largest tire I can put on a stock 17" wheel (2005 DC Limited)?

The truck comes stock with 265/65R17 but I'd really like to put the BF Goodrich TA/KO 285/70R17 on there. They make a 265/70R17, but I'm not thinking I would get the bang for my buck by upgrading the height just a little (additionally it will make the tire look skinnier I'm afraid).

I'm willing to put a 2.5" leveling kit (coils over struts), but the guy at the 4x4 shop tells me I'd have to get new wheels even still due to back spacing issues to accommodate that size tire. He even said that I'd run into an issue with a 275 (was looking at a Goodyear as well).

The thing is, I really want to keep my factory wheels. Has anyone upgraded their tires on the stock wheels? If so, how big and how much rubbing (if any) are you experiencing? Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Thanks!

You're gonna rub with that tire and the stock rims, the easiest way to get around it would be to add wheel spacers. But not many people recommend those. You either have to get smaller tires or get new wheels. I chose the new wheel route, and i still have some minor rubbing with my 285's. But well worth it, you can look at some pics in my gallery.

Thanks for the Reply TJ. Is your minor rubbing only on sharp turns? Also how much did you lift your truck?

It rubs on sharp turns but barely, the rub that bugs me is when i make a turn into a driveway and it rubs when the suspension compresses and the tire hits the pinchweld under the fender. I have planned out cutting some out, but haven't gotten to it yet. I know some other guys have done that in the past and it has helped with clearance. I've got about 2.5" of lift up front. Not sure if it's exaclty 2.5" but it's close.

Great looking truck. Do you know the back spacing on your wheels? Thanks for any help you can give.
