Default It can be done: Remote Start with Factory keyless entry

I've read on this board several posts about remote start with and without the factory keyless entry. The big question was whether you can use the factory remote to activate the keyless entry & remote start. Well, it can be done!

I didn't have much to do today so I strolled into my local stereo shop (Dashboard Stereo in Durham, NC) to ask them this question. "No Problem" was the answer. $250 and a couple of hours later I now have a remote start using the factory toyota remote that came with the truck:

push "unlock" once: Driver's door unlocks
push "unlock" twice: All doors unlock
push "unlock" three times: the truck starts with all doors open

The doors do not lock again if you don't enter in a minute (like they do if you just click it once or twice and don't open any doors).

They intalled the "Valet 561T Remote Start Module"
http://directed.com/security/valet/val_rs.asp

don't ask me any details about the install...for $250 installed, I jumped at the chance to just sit back and let them do it.

I have a 2004 Tundra Double Cab SR5 with keyless entry...and now: REMOTE START

Cheers,
Brian

Is it safe to assume that you can push the lock button after it starts to get the doors locked back up and keep the thing running?

Thanks for the info...this fits the bill for me!

The shop i went to gave me the following options. $250 as you did keep factory remotes and everything as you state.

OR

$300 and I get new remotes. Here's the benefit. The new remotes include another antenna which now gives me over 1000 ft away to start the truck as well as all my doors stay locked and can be unlocked with the remote still. The factory keyless entry is disabled once truck is started and the distance is never great any way. How often do you need to be right next to your truck before it unlocks?? Your starter will be the same. If I need to go out to have the signal reach I might as well just get in and leave. If you live in an apartment or work where you can see your truck out the window you can start it from a WHOLE LOTTA stories up.

Krodad,
Never assume or even presume on this. You won't be able to lock the doors once started with the factory remotes.

I'm not judging here, but why would one want to remote start a vehicle without the ability to keep it locked?
One more assumptiion, sorry...even started, I'm SURE the truck can't be driven away without a key in the ignition, but it would seem to invite some evil-doer to want to investigate the option.

The last time I assumed something important, I had to buy diapers some months later, so I hear you on the "shame on me" thing.

I'm still trying to figure out why someone even needs a 'remote' start feature to begin with.

If you still have to put the key in the ignition, what does it hurt to take the extra effort of turning it to start the engine...

I can understand 'remote' locking / unlocking, but come on...

Yes it can be done but one of the downsides is that the range of the factory remotes is alright but not as good as the aftermarket remotes. Especially the two-way remotes these days have a great range plus you can look at your remote to see if it's started or if you remembered to lock your doors or alert you if one of the zones is triggered.

Living in Mississippi you wouldn't need one. Living in Minnesota, where it gets well below zero in the winter, it's sure nice to get into a truck that's already warmed up.

I totally agree, here in Illinois the remote start would be such a benificial feature especially in the colder months

I don't doubt having a 'warm' vehicle would be nice... but how often does someone 'remote' start the vehicle and walk away for five minutes or longer to give it time to warm up?

A nice feature, but I still don't see justification for it... Nice to know it can be done though...

I run a snowmaking plant during the winter. When I leave at midnight (four nights per week) or 4:00AM (one night per week) all I have to do during shift change is go to the window and press the remote. I will have a warm, LOCKED truck waiting for me.

The alternative is to run downstairs, through the woods, across the ski trail (where we probably are making snow) and to the street to start my truck and LEAVE THE KEY IN IT, RUNNING, ON THE STREET while I run BACK to the plant to finish checking out for the night and then REPEAT the trip...

I'm getting the Prestige APS-997 installed next Thursday...

People "need" it the same as they "need" a cell phone, microwave oven, cordless phone in the house, credit cards, home computer, power windows and air conditioning, even INDOOR plumbing. NEEDED.....NOPE......WANT it for convienience.....DEFINITELY. You understand the need for remote unlocking, why, to difficult to insert the key in the lock and turn? The remote starts do not require you to put the key in the ignition but for some (as mine) you do need to get an extra piece that mounts a key somewhere in a box that reads the code because of the security chip. If you step on brake (to put in gear) without the key inserted and turned on the truck dies. I also "trashed" the key that they use for the remote start with a file so it will not work for ignition if they do somehow break in and find it and try to use it.

Many days in the winter and summer. While getting ready about 5-10 before I leave and don't have shoes or jacket on.

For us up North being able to start the truck and have heat going as stated is real nice on the less than 20 degree days especially when you have a baby only a couple months old (mine are past that 2 & 5 now) and have to run to store or doctor. For the southern members it works just as well for AIR CONDITIONING Those 90+ days baking in the sun, truck over 110 due to windows being up in the sun all day, truck is COOL when you get in.

How about living in the desert, temperature reaches 115-120 in the shade, in a closed vehicle, the temperature reaches serious problems at 135-150 inside (enough to cook an egg in its shell), starting a vehicle to cool it down is a serious relief from an absolutely horrendous heat. The other side as others have stated is winter time where a frozen car is not something you want to deal with when you are trying to get up and awake for work in the AM.

Well put Merlinium. Last year I haD A Thermometer in my A/c vents, I almost Sh!!!!t my pants, it said 200, of course it had been 122 that day. I have been thinking about adding the remote start too just for the A/C, but it would be nice to for the winters too( yes Vegas gets to the teens and thats cold when your used to the heat), my truck doesnt get garaged so its cold in the AM sometimes.
Have you ever tried to take your truck out of PARK and grab a shift lever that was 150+ degrees? CD's/Cassettes cant be left in the vehicle, seious meltdown. Seat belt buckles will blister your skin. You get the picture.

I'm not a big fan of the remote starts, simply because it's a waste of fuel. I don't pre-warm or cool my vehicles. However, my wifes vehicle used for hauling the kids does have a remote start so they don't have to freeze or get into a hot vehicle.

I just thought of something...does the OEM Tundra remote have the ability to roll down the windows? A couple of my vehicles have had this and it's real nice. My wife's Odyssey does this, so she usually will crack the windows with the remote and then start it. Cools off a lot quicker if the windows are cracked. By the time she gets the kids ready and out to the vehicle, it's cooled/warmed up nicely.
