Default rear diff oil

Ok, did the search thing, that only made me more confused...
My manual states to use 75w-140 for the rear diff.
All of the searches on here say that Mobil 1 75w-90 is fine, but some say 80w90, which is it????

I'm changing both diffs and t case tomorrow, but I'm still not sure what to put in the rear diff...
I've got 3 quarts of Mobil 1 75w-90 for the t case and front diff.

Now, if it is 75w-140, I can't find any syn oil in that weight, geez, my head hurts

Yeah i'm with ya. I wanted to change my diff and transfer case oil recently but i wasn't to sure on what to get for what. I was also looking seriously into royal purple, but not sure if it's worth it. I've heard for years that it's top notch stuff, but I wanted to hear what other people with Toys had to say about it.

i just did my truck..i used 75-90 in everything. I spoke w/ mobil 1 and they agreed that's what i should add. I also added some Lucas 75-90 synthetic lube to it sort of mixed them and it sounds and feels sooo much smoother. Hope this helps....

75-90 is recommended but make sure that if you need a limited slip diff additive you use it! I know a guy that had a service from a local lube shop and lost the rear end due to the repair shops lack of product knowledge!

also, some posts say not to use synthetic in a LSD diff. you might want to go with dino oil in the rear if you have lsd.

sorry, i know this ads more confusion, but it's worth trying to absorb some of the knowedge of those who have gone before us and already made the mistakes!

good luck.

You know, I'm 99% sure I don't have an LSD(bought the truck used). Is there any marking on the diff casing?
Guess I could just go out and lay some rubber see if it lays a pair...

Just Great.
I have what appears to be the reminence of a sticker right next to the fill bolt on the pumpkin. Rectangular, looks like it came off some time ago. Any other tale tell signs???

Won't hurt anything to just add the LSD additive would it? Even if I don't have LSD?

thanks guys.

Just found this thread:
http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forum...ht=LSD+sticker

I have the sticker to the left of the fill bolt... No obvious LSD sticker like that.

I've got to rotate the tires soon anyway, I'll just wait til then and turn the wheels just to be absolutly sure...

Well, if anyone is interested:
Called my toyota dealership today just to be sure what weight oil to put in the rear diff. They said for 03 and 04, use only the Toyota fully syn 75W140. Showed me a TSB that says the used a different seal, and if any other oil is used, it must be changed every 15k under special operating conditions. Doesn't really make sense to me, if the seals are gonna leak because your not using this "special" diff oil, what would changing it every 15k change???
Anyway, bought it, figured better be safe with the "good" stuff. Mobil 1 75w90 going in the front and t case, they didn't seem to have anything bad to say about that...
Here's the link for the TSB:

just passing it along...

Did your toyota dealership actually sell you the rear differential fluid? I tried to buy some for my 03 and they said they only have it available in a 55-gal drum for their use in the service bay and that I couldn't buy it in quart sizes. They told me to just use any synthetic 75w140. I then told them that it would increase the service interval (referencing the TSB) and they said that was bull dung.

I asked if this was Hanlees Toyota in Davis specific or if all dealerships wouldn't sell the diff fluid. They said ALL dealerships wouldn't sell it.

If you were able to buy some I'd like to know.

I just changed the oil in the differentials and transfer cases of my '00 Tundra and '01 Sequoia. It had 55,xxx and 50,xxx miles on it, respectively.

The old oil was, and the new oil is, Mobil 1 75W-90. The old oil was was clean and clear, and it looked exactly like the new oil. There was very little sediment on the drain plug magnets.

This was the first time I had used Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil. I'm sold.

My front and rear diff's were both cloudy. Not real bad, I've seen worse in some of my other vehicles. Not much sediment, this florida sugar sand gets into everything...
Man o man, she shifts into and out of 4WD like butter now...should've done it a while ago...
