Re: Attention: THOSE OF YOU with TRD SUPERCHARGER—Check in
Thanks for the replies, guys
As soon as I get back to Texas I will get on it. I am in Louisiana on a job for a few weeks and just have to think about it sitting at home all alone, waiting for me.....yay. Sure makes for good dreams at night though
Re: Attention: THOSE OF YOU with TRD SUPERCHARGER—Check in
At idle you can only hear it if you are paying attention and know what to listen for....a WOT I've heard the sound described as "sucking a large baby through the supercharger"...in reality, there is no mistaking the sound...very loud and high pitched
Re: Attention: THOSE OF YOU with TRD SUPERCHARGER—Check in
I hope nobody gets too offended if I chime in even though I don't own Tundra with the TRD blower. I am surprised nobody else has made mention of the potoential of standalone or any kind of real dyno tuning. I can't believe some of you use the words "some pinging" and "totally satisfied" in the same sentence! Fact is, it it pings, it can be tuned better. If it can be tuned better, more power can be made. Do not underestimate the amount of horsepower that can be extracted from a good dyno tune.
Here's an example: for years in the SR20DET 240sx community, people were insisting that 240 rwhp was the limit of an SR20DET with just bolt ons and raised boost on the stock turbo. With cams, maybe 265. Well one of Tampa's best SR20DET tuner took my SR20DET 240sx, dropped in the most conservative cams available, strapped it to a dyno, did a ROM tune, and pulled 308 rwhp right away. His record with that same setup is 338 rwhp! And it was running perfectly well like that.
With a good engine management system and a knowledgeable tuner, even completely stock cars can see inpressive power increases.
So I hope some of you try it, I would love to see the results! I bet you'd be pleasantly surprised.
Re: Attention: THOSE OF YOU with TRD SUPERCHARGER—Check in
You are absolutely correct in what you are saying, Washupndurty, however, the Tundra is a weird animal and doesn't lend itself well to the sorts of ems stuff as other vehicles. You can send your entire ECU to Jet for a re-tune, but it doesn't get very frisky from there...Unichip makes a proprietary piggyback and will tune it for your application, but they haven't broken many of the codes...for instance, the engine is still red-lined at 5,300 rpm. I am going to do exactly what you say, but the route is very time consuming and expensive. I will use a stand-alone to run the engine/trans and use the stock ECU as the piggyback (best way I know to describe it. Check out www.lextreme.com/tundra.html to see what I'm doing....it's different than any street Tundra that I am aware of.
Re: Attention: THOSE OF YOU with TRD SUPERCHARGER—Check in
Pulley Boys from Washington State make supercharger pulleys that will fit the TRD 4.7 liter blower, and they slip on and off with no press fit. 2.2 is the stock size.

Try a DAWES DEVICE http://www.3barracing.com/
I have one and have it adjusted to 7psi right now, I could go more, but dont want to mess with it at the moment.
It's $25 and if it doesnt work for you, I would definatly try the 2.0 pulley like JJC said. 8 psi is about the limit I would take it to, thats why i stopped at 7.

If you're hearing ANY pinging with a supercharger - that's BAD BAD BAD! Even if I had a non vvti 2uz-fe, I wouldn't waste any money on the TRD blower. Every tundra I've seen (heard) so far with this blower has had some form of detonation problems. Say what you want, if you have any detonation, you will destroy even the stoutest of engines - weak stock internals or not.
I'm convinced the problem is the design and stock tune (or lack of tuning for that matter) of the TRD setup - add on injectors are always going to be a band-aid since the intake is designed for air only, not air-fuel mix. There will always be fuel distribution problems with this kind of setup. The other issue is that a roots blower of the TRD design will put a lot of heat into the intake charge - poor design, but I understand it has to fit under the stock hood. A centrifugal SC with or w/o an intercooler will be much more efficient for this engine. Of course all this hardware stuff is worthless without proper engine managment, but that's still a problem because toyota doesn't want to let us tap into the ecu coding.
All this said, I think the weakest link to the 2uz-fe isn't the motor itself, rather than the lack of proper tunablility with the stock ecu, so you can't just put in a slightly larger set of injectors and adjust the duty cycles to match. Unichips are respectable units, but I think they are also just bubble-gum and duct tape. I will hold off on forced induction until someone comes up with a stand alone engine management for the tundra that will also control the auto trans, or when someone finally figures out a way to program the stock ecu.

The differance believe it or not is noticible. It's fully adjustable, I have it adjusted pretty far down and only got a few lbs out of it. There is more thread to go, but I am not willing to chance it at the moment.
It takes about 5 minutes to install, the longest part is the test drive to see what the boost has changed to. Its not the best idea out there , but for now it will do. I am sure it would work better on a turbo setup. It doesnt add fuel or air, it just makes the boost actator take longer to get to full boost, and more boost to reach full boost.
