This is a discussion thread titled "5 Year Old Mystry Rattle Solved!", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hi Folks, thought you all might get a kick out of this one!
NO kidding, for five years plus, I have had a mystry rattle comming from somewhere, something, who knows what with the exhaust system, it's a cat back Gibson, with a rattle that was driving me to drink more than I already do and thats too much most days...
To Date:
I have removed the cat back, shook it out, looked up he pipe, had my dealer at the time, check it, had another guy look at it, made my friend drive/trade it for the week...still, no one could find the elusive anoying tin can rattle comming from under the tundra.
That was untill yesterday evening:
After watching the Olympics, swilling a few VT brews down in Burlington, I headed home...the beer was aching to get out, so I had to pull off onto a very quiet little dirt road to empty the bladder (dont worry folks, not drunk on two beers)...walking around to the passenger side to make my delivery, I had one hand on the shell the other...well you get the picture...when the idle speed dropped, the RATTLE began, my eyebrows shot up, my fists clenched(dont worry folks, only the left fist clenched hard) the rattle was low and steady, but it was there and somewhat easier to hear in the cold quiet night! I zipped up and bent down to get a better audio and in doing so, touched the DAM TWIN TIPS OF MY GIBSON OUTLETS!!!, the rattle STOPPPPPED! I let go, the rattle starts, I touch it, the rattle stops...this goes on for quite sometime, like a kid that just discovered how to really anoy his little sister, absolutley facinating!
Seems like when the twins were installed, they had a MINUTE gap between them, if the gap gets just the right amount of space, RATTLE RATTLE RATTLE, when the TEMP or the Idle speed is JUUUUUUST right, it rattles! Otherwise, nothing, sometimes for months NOTHING!
Boy you should have seen the snow kickin, cuss-fest, fist pounder that went on, half of this was JOY to find the answer, the other was pure ANGER at the amount of time and $$$ spent on this silly anoyance only to find it on a cold winters night pissing in the vermont countryside!
Anyway, glad to SHARE this with all of you, hope someone can use this with thier mystry rattle!!!
Happy Truckin!
MC

A couple years back, I broke off an exhaust manifold bolt on my 76 Blazer. The damned thing broke off around 3/8" below the surface of the head. I thought long and hard about how to get it out since I couldn't even see into the hole. I finally got the bright idea to get a spacer the same size as the hole and use it as a pilot to guide the drill bit into the broken screw. I dug out a small cordless drill and drilled it in no time. When I stuck the easy out in it and gave it a turn, I was disgusted to find it turned too easily. I about crapped when I withdrew the broken off screw the first time I tried. I was all alone in my driveway and hollered out "I'm king of the world". I guess Titanic inspired me lol.
The long story short is I know exactly how you felt with the rattle solving.
Glad you solved your mystery, but drinking and driving don't mix. You really need to show some good judgment and stop rationalizing that you weren't drunk. You need to drive responsibly. I enjoy a beer or two myself and my kids (teens) KNOW that dad does not drive even if he had one beer. It's a good rule and example. I don't want a flame war, just my 2 cents worth.
tachishoben! at least it was productive. im glad you found what was haunting your tundra. i hope you went home to have a few more ... to celebrate your discovery.

Great story, glad you finally found your rattle. I'm going to have a drink tonight for every year you had to deal with the frustration of that dam rattle.
Now, MCarrerasTRD, your next mission, should you chose to accept it is to find out where the BLOODY HELL the rattle in the Tundra dash is truly coming from!
