so apparently tundra's have a ****ed up stock head unit, and so everywhere i go wants to charge me like 3-4 hours labor to install a double-din dvd monitor where the stock head unit is... but they all say its a 1hour job to insert a single din flip out, but thats tacky and doesnt look nearly as clean as a double din... anyone else experiencing this problem? has anyone put a double din in their tundra?
i was thinking about installing the pioneer D1, i think it will fit!!
actually installing one yourself should be fairly easy, take a few hours over the weekend, give crutchfield a call, they should be able to send you detailed instructions on how to make it work, plus the satisfaction of doing it yourself would make it that much more enjoyable
Get a stereo from Crutchfield.com I bought mine from them and they send you complete removal/installation instruction for your specific make and model vehicle. It took me 45min to pull the original stereo/amp put in the new Pioneer, pull the rear speakers and install new ones.
They also send you connectors so you just plug the new unit right in. The only soldering (or you could use bullet connectors) that needs to be done is the new connectors to the head unit.

They are also relatively inexpensive.

the problem is places like best buy say that double dins wont even fit tundras, maybe because they dont want to give free isntallation on a job they know will have to be custom, another problem is that you have to custom cut out some dash material for it to look good, you almost have to have a shop to this part... i have a friend that works at one and this is what he told me...

Not true. No cutting required. You do not even need a double din. You can get a single din and an installation kit that will fill the open areas. I can get ya a pic of how it looks when done properly using a single din if you want.
Ditto the crutchfield comment. If you are new to doing installs on your own, their customer support is second to none. You can do better than cf in price elsewhere, but for the stuff you need, like the harnesses, wiring diagrams and din pockets they're it, IMO. But if you consider that when you buy a stereo from them, all that stuff is free, then their prices are closer to the rest of the market.
The part # from crutchfield to allow you to install a single din is Item #081TOYPOC (I think this is the one I used, but check to make sure it fits your application). Poke around on their website, you'll learn just from reading and looking.
I used the pocket with my JVC HU (see signature). I think it looks great. I had pics in my gallery before the change, but I'll update one of these days.

Sounds like you Crutchfield gave you the Metra brand plastic mounting bracket with the pocket down below the HU? How did it work out? I started to install mine yesterday, and that bracket looks really flimsy. I can't see how that can hold the HU securely on a rough road.
just bought a kenwood dpx301 from online car stereo. its a double din and is supposed to fit my 00' perfect. Going to have local shop do the install. I'll let you know how it goes. Shouldn't be a prob. Looking for the sub boxes that fit under rear passenger seat. Does anyone have them? If so how was install?
According to Crutchfields website, the double din won't fit . I am very curious to hear how this plays out. I would love to put a DD in my 03. I am not worried about cutting on the dash cover plate if that is all that is needed. Please folks post some pictures of DD in your Tundra's and let us know about the install.
TIA
Tom

Try doing a search for the Eclipse 5435. Lots of posts about it. Crutchfield says it won't fit but it is a direct fit. Kenwood makes a similar unit (7015 or 7017 I think) as does Pioneer (can't remember the model number of this one). They are all double din units that fit the Tundra with members on TS that are using all of them. I'm purchasing the Eclipse unit this week.

The HU is still bolted brackets in the dash and is secure. The screws for the pocket are below, and attach separately.

Sorry, misread your first post. I don't know about doing a double din install in a tundra, or fitment issues related to the 'standard' double din stereos. It all depends on your tastes, but I can post pics of my install if you'd like.
