Question khouse

I got a 2001 AC SR5 V8 with 79200 miles. The truck has given me no problems I just recently had the two front O2 sensors replaced because of check engine light and that was done under the enhancement warranty. I was curious, last time the dealership changed transmission fluid but I would like to do this myself to save money. I am also going to change the rear differential oil but would like to know how much fluid and oil are required for a change. The owners manual says 2.1 Qts for the transmission but I heard its a little more and the differential oil says 4Qts of 75W/80W-90. I'm just curious if anyone has performed this and what they ran into.

Thanks,

Drain & refill of transmission is 4 qts. For rear differential, I don't recall exactly, but it's somewhere between 2-3 qts when I changed it a couple years ago. You just keep filling it until it comes out the fill hole.

Hey ThomasE, would you recommend using the synthetic in the rear and how about adding synthetic to the existing transmission fliuid. I've been running Mobil 1 synthetic in the engine for awhile. I was just curious if it made a difference in the rear diff. and the transmission.

Thanks,

I've been running Mobil 1 synthetic for engine, transmission, and rear differential. Since you have a 2001, the transmission calls for Dexron 3 or compatible, so the Mobil 1 works well, feels like it shifts smoother to me. For the rear diff, it runs cooler after I switched to synthetic. I put my hand on the diff after driving the same route home from work, before & after switch to synthetic and it's noticably cooler w/ synthetic. I know if you have a later model (like 2003? & later) you're not suppose to use synthetic in the diff because of seals but I've been using synthetic for probably 4 years now working great.

Khouse,

If I remember correctly, a full transmission fluid change is around 8-10 quarts. I did this on my 00 several years ago and used synthetic fluid. Fluid cost was around $130 and instructions for a complete flush were in the technical and vehicle assistance forms. Synthetic tranny fluid made a big difference in shifting, smoothness and tranny temp but you need to do a full flush otherwise you have a mixture of fluids and will not get the full benifit.

if you have a rear LSD, make shure you get LSD fluid or an LSD additive
