My truck is an '04 Access Cab. Anyway, I got the recall letter from Toyota to get the ball joints replaced. I went to the dealer this morning, and after having the truck for 2 hours, they tell me that it was not affected by the recall but the service tech inspected my ball joints and everything is ok. I asked the service advisor about the letter from Toyota and was told that was sent to everyone with a Tundra/Sequoia/4Runner/Tacoma and not all trucks that received letters had the defective ball joints.
Has this happened to any of you? I haven't heard of this happening, but I don't read the board all the time.
you would think that there would be a way to track which cars received the bad ball joints during manufacturing and recall only those cars. i cannot see them sending this letter to every car and having a tech do 2 hours of work for nothing.
that is just my thought process, i could be totally wrong
Well I called back for further clarification, and was told that if the ball joint nut is 17mm, that the ball joint is ok and not one of the affected ball joints. She said my truck fell into the VIN range of vehicles to get the inspection and had the nut been 14mm, the ball joints would have been replaced.
Oh well, I'm sure this has happened to others that took their trucks in for the replacement and maybe they just didn't know it.
It odd that you get a recall notice even though you weren't affected. I never got one and found out it the hard way. My dad has an 04 and never received one either, when he called Toyota with his vin he was told his wasn't affected. I was wondering if the dealer tried to sell you any service while you were there?
Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a difference in the world, but the Marines don’t have that problem. —President Ronald Reagan
Well I received the recall notice about the ball joints since my truck fell into the range of tundras that are affected. Then the service tech checks the nut holding them on...if its a 14mm nut, then the ball joints get replaced. If its a 17mm nut, the ball joints are ok and do not need to be replaced.
Toyota doesn't know what particular ball joints are on your truck without looking, but they know if there is a possibility of the affected ball joints being on your truck.
I would be willing to bet there are a good number of folks on here that took there trucks in for the ball joint replacement and this very same thing happened to them.

04 tundras were not on the list unless yours was a pre early 04 model..Which dealership did you go to cobb or marrietta Toyota?
Had my truck into dealer for pre-purchase inspection. When I picked it up, service manager goes over billing, shows me he changed ball joints per recall, aligned front-end and billed Toyota, no cost to me...great! Crawl under truck and saw new ball joints rusted and looking just like the old ones over a simple 30 min ride home. Oh wait, he lied to me. Call them back, and they tell me my vehicle wasn't affected... do you think he called Toyota and told them not to send the check! No wonder new vehicles cost so much.
Mine is an early 04 and the VIN was listed in the affected truck range. As I stated, I received the recall notice from Toyota.
I went to Mall of GA Toyota in north Gwinnett. I had a good experiance with them when I bought my truck a couple years ago, but there are some bad dealers around here too. Marietta Toyota comes to mind. Any thoughts on this TundraV8Georgia?
Yes I was informed from another service advisor that Toyota pays the dealers "good money" for replacing the ball joints in the recall, so I'm sure there are some dealers trying to scam Toyota.

Marietta and Both Cobb/cherokee (mike perrin dealerships) have been knowen To take advantages of certain situations from The Toyota Tsb's from there customer's but if there smart enought to read into the fine print I don't take any excuses period from them and tell them where to go which i have a few times ..
Finding a good Honest dealership in the Georgia area is like finding a good loyal friend I told my coworker to avoid Cobb and Cherokee Toyota and she took my advice and got her brand new Matrix at Roswell Toyota which seems like a great dealership to work with. There is a bad Apple Stealer ship almost everywhere Today just got to look for the good attention to detail's and service people who you can trust ...
